ATAG_Noofy has just uploaded Canyon Run Variations!

Here are two variations of the Canyon Run mission uploaded by Oskar:

    Canyonrun - reverse

It is basically the same mission as Oskar's, except that it goes the other way round to fly downhills instead of uphills. It starts all the way south and ends in Derna.

    Other changes:
    1. time set to late afternoon (better lighting in my opinion)
    2. HUD now shows time, both average altitudes above ground and above sea, and a score (*)
    3. changed the start and end lines to be yellow markers (you have to pass between them), and color-coded the cones along the way: RED cones = LEFT turns, BLUE cones = RIGHT turns

(*) I added the average altitude above sea level back for the following reason: once you pass through the departure cones and trigger the timer, you could climb a little, set direct course to the finish line over the plateau. As long as you keep close to the ground, your altitude over ground will be low, but your time will be much lower as if flying though the canyon. By showing both altitudes you can ensure people fly through the canyon... The scoring is very simple. I basically multiply the time in seconds by the sum of both average altitudes, and divide by 100 to keep the numbers low.

    The lowest score wins!

    Canyonrun - 2

Same as above except that this goes through the "hidden Derna canyon" (to the north-west of the other). It is deeper, narrower, and has much tighter turns than the other one.

    Not for the faint hearted!!

I changed the default plane to a G.50 (because why not?) as the F4 was too fast, at least for me, to go through the tight turns. But you can change that to your preferred plane by clicking on "ESC" then "Customize". Suggest you start with a slow plane like the Tiger Moth...

"RED cones = LEFT turns, BLUE cones = RIGHT turns"

That's seriously reducing those funny "Oh sh*t!!!" moments.

In a sense you are right, however it lets you anticipate, and therefore take more risks. I get even more "Oh sh*t!!!" moments because I pass much closer to the cliffs and to the ground...

I had initially prepared two separate zip files which I later combined into a single zip file. You are correct, that is too many zip files.

I have edited it and now when you extract the contents of the Canyonrun - variations.zip file, you will get two folders labeled "Canyonrun - 2" and "Canyonrun - reverse".

Just copy and paste these two folders under "Documents\1C SoftClub\il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover\missions\Single" (note "missions" , not "mission"), and you can access them from the menu Single Player > Single Mission menu.

Just three suggestions (also for @ATAG_Noofy's variants):
1: Not just Blue markings (think about videos)
    2. It would be nice to spawn just a little bit further from the starting point, to give you a chance to adjust trim, radiator and engine settings without flying a full circle first.
    3. It would be a good thing if you could adjust the load-outs. This would make it possible to compare single engine fighter's performance at approximately the same weight.
And for those who like it the hard way and fly this in a two engine bomber it would make it a bit easier.
It's a lot of fun in a Welli, but you don't really have to shlep all those 500lb bombs all the way

    S!

    DerDa
    1: Done.

When you first spawn in you get the default (Italian) plane, then you can select "Custom" and choose the nationality you want (GB, DE, IT), and the plane you like.

Note: there will be 3 planes, 2 AIs and you. You can set the number of AI planes to zero, or keep them as is. You can engage in dogfights with them if you want, but they won't follow you deep in the canyon

    2: Done.

For the "Canyonrun - reverse" you now spawn in a little to the north and higher, and the canyon entry will be to your left

For the "Canyonrun - 2" you spawn firther out and higher up but still aligned with the poles. The entry poles are behind the first hill so you need to dive. Beware as the extra speed makes the first S quite hard, so you may want to start with less throttle in the first trials.

3: Done, but not sure it works 100%.

I cannot get the loadout menu to work from withing the mission. I think you have to set the loadout from Options>Plane in the Main Menu.
To be sure that there are no bombs, I hit salvo and release the bombs at the beginning of each run. This may not be necessary but at least I am sure.

I added a few camels along Canyonrun - Reverse. Look for them at the first left turn.
I added a few goats, a pond, and a resting area at the arrival of Canyonrun - 2. Try landing on the road and taxi to the pond/tents.

Coming: working on a night version with searchlights etc...

    You chaps are amazing.

I confess I’ve been having obscene fun with Oskar’s versions. It’s been easy enough to import his mission(s) into the Full Mission Builder and thoroughly corrupting it with all kinds of goodness. I’ve been inserting multiple and varied AAA as you round the bends, fuel trucks to blow up (didn’t know I could crash the sim with...say...20 fuel trucks blowing up! LOL).

All to say, great fun. Found out you can collapse the cones with well-aimed cannon fire. Should get points for that...

Thank you, Oskar, for all kinds of fun here!

    Voilà
Slightly better score. Flying slower but closer to the ground.

    Very impressive score!
But I didn't care about the score, just tried to get the best time.
    Speed rulz!

Now I will check other aircraft, it's very useful to lear how to push them to their limits.
(I'm sure all those guys doing car or bike racing find a similar excuse for having fun ...)

I don't care about the score either. Just demonstrating how flying closer to the ground can influence it.

You get lower times because you obviously fly a longer course by following the deepest parts of the canyon, which is not necessarily the shortest route. The altitude and scoring system is just a way to make sure people don't take too obvious "short cuts"...

Re: ATAG_Noofy has just uploaded Canyon Run Variations!

Now, how do you calculate the height above ground, if you bank your plane by 90°?
Is it the wingtip closest to the ground that counts?
Or the one furthest from the ground? Or the centre of the aircraft?
    Questions, questions, questions

The first possibility would clearly be in favour of those little shot winged thingies, while grown up planes like the Welli inevitably get a worse score.
This sounds like a perfect excuse for this result:

    Welli 1.jpg

    Did try only once though.

I also tested the score thing and I went superslow just to see if I would get more score, which I did, so I believe the lower the score, the better..

    Yes, lower score = better.

Score = time (in seconds) x (average altitude AMSL + average altitude above ground) / 100

Not sure this is the best formula, but it is simple. Happy to implement anything that makes more sense, including inverting it so that higher score is better.

    Open to suggestions.

    Hello Noofy,

    give it a try:

    Score = time (in seconds) x (1 / average altitude above ground) * 100

Well, time has to be in the denominator if you want to have shorter time = higher score...
Also I want to include average altitude above sea level as well, otherwise you can trigger the counter, then climb to the plateau, and fly straight to the finish line on the deck...

    Hello Noofy,

understand. With a few more triggers you can control the flight path as well. Passing the trigger on a certain height AGL you can give extra points....

    ~V~

Edit: AMSL is always equal or higher than AGL. So you can try this:
Score = time (in seconds) x (1/ (average altitude AMSL - average altitude above ground ) * 100

Yes I need to learn more about triggers.
Are these documented anywhere or ... do we just know them (or not)?
Score must be inversely proportional to time (i.e. lower total time = higher score). The problem is at the beginning you get very high scores because the time is very low...

I put a scoring simulation in a excel sheet. Cannot find a good formula...
