    Vickers Wellington Flight Console

A few years ago, when news broke that a flyable Wimpey was going to be created,I got creative and built myself a bomber's flight console, partly based on the Wellington's flight console.

Now that we finally have the Wellington in all it's flyable glory,I have dug out my console, and after binding all the Wellington's controls here she is......she work's a treat,he says modestly. The first picture is obviously my effort, the second picture shows two of the real thing, the third, shows where it was sited on the Wellington (Taken from the restoration Wimpey at Cosford,UK)and finally the forth shows what controls I have bound to it so far.

I purchased the Saitek Throttle Quadrants when they were at a sensible price £25 each, these days the damn things are close to £100 each,madness.....they're only made of plastic, and unpainted they look really cheap and nasty.

It's great finally being able to put this badboy to use,and helps make engine management very simple and straight forward.....opening the bomb bay doors really gives a great sense of immersion too.

Nice work. How did you make that irregularly shaped piece that the Saiteks are mounted on?

I have five devices clamped to my desk which is not ideal

Yeah,it's easy (must be if I made it),just good old MDF,braced in the middle with 1" pine battens, then tops and bottoms added, all wood glued, sanded, undercoated and sprayed in automotive satin black. The throttle quadrants are secured in place using industrial strength velcro, the sort of velcro you'd secure car number plates with,so they're really secure.

Here's my tip, build it reasonably heavy, this way the console won't move when under constant operation.

Great work Meaks. I fly mainly the Blenheim and now the Wellington and occasionally blue bombers. I am thinking of investing in the Saitek Yoke and throttle quadrant but prices, even on e-bey are silly.

Vickers Wellington Mk1c. OJ-F P2517 'F for Freddie' of No.149 Squadron, star of 'Target for Tonight' directed by Harry Watt released in July 1941.

Freddy prepares for an air test prior to departure from Ford on ops with No.149 Squadron for a daring daylight attack on Marshalling Yards in Caen France 31\1|21. ATAG Operation Milk Run. Target destroyed. Six Wellingtons, One Blenheim together with
their Spitfire escort returned safely. One Wellington crashed on landing at Ford.

    Re: Vickers Wellington Flight Console

Hi Flak Boss, yes, unfortuntely the prices have now gone daft,on Ebay I think the cheapest throttle quadrant (new) is £79,but when I checked Amazon today, they were £59,so check there for a better price

I also flew the Blennie prior to the Wimpey being available, the Wimpey IMHO is by far an easier aircraft to fly,far easier engine management,I recall the take offs with the Blennie, having to select Boost on,with fine pitch at 100%,and then once airborne having to de-select the Boost and dropping the pitch to course, halcyon days.

Good luck with the Saitek Yoke and throttle quadrant shopping mate.

    Re: Vickers Wellington Flight Console

Here's a small update for those interested,I decided to move my console to the correct position, the left side of my cockpit, previously I had it on the right side. The real Wimpey had it's console on the left.

So you can see it better,I have removed my bucket seat, picture 2 shows the whole pit.

    Re: Vickers Wellington Flight Console

    That’s a great cockpit, Meaker!

I’m currently reworking mine to better manipulate the Wimpey controls. Hopefully today I’m getting delivered a new “magnetic base” for my Warthog flightstick. I’m hoping to locate a source for an extension for it. For turret gunnery I’m contemplating using my TM16000 stick, utilizing either the X or Z (twist) axis for turret yaw control. I’m finding the two rotary axis on my olde and anciente Cougar throttle handy for elevator and rudder trim. Tons of fun experimenting, then trying to remember what controls what!

    Re: Vickers Wellington Flight Console

Hi Snapper, yeah, there's a whole world of fun in the experimentation of new and existing kit,I run a 15cm extension on my Warthog, mounted on a block to raise the stick so it's located where I want it as per my pics.

Lol,yesterday, after having everything what I thought was pretty much worked out,I had to come 'cap in hand' and ask on the forum for a very embarrassing question, how to fire the turret machine guns.I always thought this was done by the Mouse button, but it seems it is done using the ' fire current weapon',this was really embarrassing that I had to ask such a noob question, but I just could'nt get the damn guns to fire

Re remembering what my controls control,I make up profiles and edit them religiously as and when I change any control,I have to do this.....as I would easily forget, what I have changed,I think it has something to do with getting old in my case.

Good luck with your set up buddy.

Heh, my little foible was “Move to gunsight”. Until I stumbled on this I was scratching my head wondering how anyone could aim through a bloody turret gun.
