Re last night's Wimpy Bomber collective flight 2nd Jan 2021

I just wanted to say, thanks guys for such a fantastic night, last night,it was stunning to see so many Wellingtons take off, form up and go on a massed drop,I know I enjoyed myself, hope you all who participated did too.

Snapper did a grand job out front, leading us into the job,and although I dropped behind a bit, being a little 'too over cautious' with my engine temps, being the new boy, and it being my first ever flight with you all,I finally caught up and dropped with the rest of the group.

Anyway, great night last night, and I would love to fly with you all again, should the invitation be open again

Thanks to everyone who made it possible

Yes, it was a good night Meaks.

You weren't the only one who dropped back from the main formation... I did too and in trying to catch up I blew an engine, so I had to respawn at Canterbury. Never did catch up with the main stream, and by the time I was half way across the channel our primary target, Caffiers, had already been taken out, so carried on to the St Omer fuel storage depot, couldn't find that, so diverted to the convoy off Dunkirk, being shot down just as I was dropping my bombs on the ships ( don't think I hit any of them)

Second sortie I took a Hurri FB to have another crack at the convoy, managed to sink a ship (It came up in chat that I had sunk a British Tanker???), then the map turned.

Back on the Tobruk map, and time for another Wellie raid. This time I managed to stay in formation for a while, but once again dropped back. Dropped my bombs somewhere near the target, but don't think I actually hit it. Got shot down again on my way back to base, but at least I managed to successfully bail out this time.

All in all a fun night

What's the fun of flying Wellies who don't even have opening side windows?

While the JU88 on the other hand is an absolute nightmare to fly, the most difficult in game. If I am blowing engines in a Wellie I have no chance with the German bombers

Agreed. A very interesting and enjoyable session. It was a real treat to see the formation making its way over the channel and frighteningly real watching a 109 single you out and dive down for a head on pass. I even ducked as he fired! After bombing Coquelles, I crash landed wounded at Canterbury with no hydraulics, no rudder control and a seized engine. On the Tobruk run I hit the target, but had to bail out shortly afterwards.

It also seemed reasonably on par with the reality of the early period of the air war. I’m currently re-reading Alastair Revie’s ‘The Lost Command’ - an account of Bomber Command’s WW2 efforts. He recounts two unescorted daylight Wellington raids in December 1939. On the 14th, 12 Wellingtons attacked Wilhelmshaven and 6 were lost - 5 shot down and 1 blowing itself up when it jettisoned its bombs at 200 feet to gain speed whilst being attacked by 109’s. On the 18th, 24 Wellingtons set out again for Wilhelmshaven, 2 returning to base with engine issues, 10 being shot down over the target area, 2 more ditching due to battle damage, and 3 written off in crash landings.

Would be great to organise a large raid with a squadron or two of fighter cover.

Thanks Meaks for your welcome last night on TS. Just a shame we couldn't chat more but with so many pilots in the briefing room it was a bit chaotic to be honest. What a fantastic sight to see thirteen Wellington's taxying for take off. I must admit to having a lump in my throat as I waited in line to receive the green from the tower. All that was missing was a group of WAAFS at the runway edge to wave us off. What a memorable night. When can we go again? Soon I hope. But next time we should be more organized.

their Spitfire escort returned safely. One Wellington crashed on landing at Ford.

Its has its moods I agree, but with a little touch (and some practice) it will take you right on target and bring you back home without a problem

You’ll never know how agreeable it is to be able to open the side windows in flight, especially during summer. Not to mention the G.50 that does not even have windows, but that is another story...
