Re: Team Fusion #3 11 Bomber run

Here’s my AAR I posted on the FaceBook ATAG - IL-2 Sturmovik Cliff of Dover page that yotheguy maintains so well:

We had a blast! Being in the lead of this mighty formation (by virtue of being the first one to take off!) I actually had the easiest job. Marlow gave me the 135 degree course bearing to our target: Caffiers airfield in Occupied France. Jeepy gave me some good tips on reduced engine settings so as not to burn ‘em out, plus allow those at the end of the formation a chance to form up. What was great was that everyone had to adjust their speed and positioning on ME - I just had to fly in a (somewhat) straight line.

Leart did a masterful job providing close escort in his Spitfire. A couple of 109’s intercepted us on our way out and did a bit of damage, but Leart capably chased them off. Quite a display of firepower from 11 Wellies in formation engaging the marauding 109’s with 22 sets of turret Browning machine guns! I expect THAT was a daunting sight to the attacking fleigers!

Jeepy spotted Caffiers airfield first and advised me to steer 5 degrees to the right. This brought us right over target. As a group we each unloaded our salvo of 18 x 250 lb bombs, and were rewarded with “Caffiers Airfield Destroyed” at the top of our screens. At that point we broke formation to make our own way home; some Wellies carrying on with their undropped bombloads to secondary targets. My controls were a bit “iffy” owing to the earlier 109 strafing attack, so I steered a course to the northwest. I crossed the coast near Calais and proceeded home uneventfully, safely touching home at Eastchurch for beer & links at the local pub.

Thanks to all for participating. It was a lot of fun and I urge anyone to come join us on further Wimpey escapades. We’re all just learning and Team Fusion Simulations’ new Wellington is a beautiful classroom. Just promise not to laugh too hard at the occasional noseover on the runway, or at some of us who forgot to open our bomb bay doors over the target!

    Fantastic footage Leart,thanks for sharing.

Re the bomber run...Speaking as one,who has only had the Wellington for just over a week and has been learning this great kite avidly over the past few days,I can vouch for Snapper's comments above, the Wellington is a superb aircraft to learn on.

I jumped on board with the enthusiasm that was growing for these massed bomber runs and have thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Last Saturday night we had our first bombing mission in the Wellington, and it was a truly was a spectacular sight to see,and although I've been flying CoD since it's release, this was something very special indeed.

Prior to flying the Wimpy I'd flown the Blenheim for years so it was'nt too much of a headache for me to get to grips with, especially the Wimperis bomb aiming sight, named after it's inventor,Harry Wimperis.the Wimpy uses the same sight in the early models like the MkIa and MkIc.The later MkIc Late uses the Mark XIV Bomb Sight,or as it was commonly known, the Blackett sight also named after its primary inventor, P. M. S. Blackett.

The root of the training to grasp is like any other aircraft...it all comes down to the engine management, once you've grasped this you're home and dry basically. All you need to do then is to get to grips with the Autopilot, and once you've mastered this the bomb aiming side of things is pretty much straight forward.

There's no getting away with it,there is a lot to learn, but learning in the group has been made easy by the superb camaraderie, and the fantastic tutorials available to the Wimpy pilot here on ATAG.

The Wellington has been beautifully modelled by those fine fellows over at Team Fusion Solutions,it really is an excellent aircraft, thanks TFS...my hat is off to you Gentlemen
