Update : Assigned my Supercharger control to the lever on my quadrant formerly used for rad control. It works fine, so that's one problem solved. Now I need to assign keys for bombing. I just hope I can remember which keys / axis operates which function

Some degree of pre-planning is the way to go for future ops. The need for security would be essential of course but perhaps several leaders could be involved in the process and then have comprehensive briefing to the pilots, early enough so that participants know the mission targets and timings.
Latecomers can be briefed on arrival. This would be similar to previous ATAG events.
For security I can easily create a "Wimpey Squad" subforum visible and accessible only to those who are in the squad. There pilots can plan, discuss, analyze without fear of giving the mission away to hostile eyes. Let me know and it will be done.

    Good idea Snaps.

Vickers Wellington Mk1c. OJ-F P2517 'F for Freddie' of No.149 Squadron, star of 'Target for Tonight' directed by Harry Watt released in July 1941.

Freddy prepares for an air test prior to departure from Ford on ops with No.149 Squadron for a daring daylight attack on Marshalling Yards in Caen France 31\1|21. ATAG Operation Milk Run. Target destroyed. Six Wellingtons, One Blenheim together with
their Spitfire escort returned safely. One Wellington crashed on landing at Ford.

    Hi Laser,
Here's my Wellington setup on my CH Throttle Quadrant. Been eyeing the Honeycomb Bravo Throttle Quadrant as a possible future upgrade; https://flyhoneycomb.com/products/br...ottle-quadrant
I've assigned number pad up/down for bombsight altitude controls, then I adjust using the the directional gyro switch on my quadrant in Mode 22 to fine tune direction as I come up to the target. The wind speed and wind direction controls are still a mystery to me as so far, I don't know to get this information. At around 12,000 feet, I'm able to hit large targets, but I haven't yet been game to go for smaller targets yet.

I am as green as fresh salad but would really like to join the squad and learn about flying the Welly. Has anyone done an editable spreadsheet for their key bindings reference?

    Hi Baxter,

In Steam, right click on the game > manage > browse local files

You'll see something along the lines of: D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\IL-2 Sturmovik Cliffs of Dover Blitz\manuals\aircraft

You'll see a number of pdf's. Look for: Flashcards All Aircraft - eng.pdf

Re the bindings, I've set some up, but I'm still fine tuning. Not sure what others have done. That could be something for discussion on Thursday if you are able to make it.

Hope this is of some assistance,
    Cheers,
    Bubba

Re: Wellington training session Thursday 7th Jan 8pm GMT

This is all very exciting and encouraging!

But would you 'Adam and Eve' it! There is a very good chance I won't be able to join you this Thursday as I have another of those (damn) Zoom sessions to attend....and I can't get out of it!

If I do manage to finish in time I will certainly hop in a Spitfire and attempt to bring some of you home safely!

I do agree with Dazz's suggestions about flying vics with lead at 1 o' clock and wing at 3 o' clock. This would be a good tactic to adopt and practice. I had to manoevre quite hard to avoid potential collision last sortie.

As many of you know, I love to use all the buttons in the cockpit in order to build immersion. And the Wellie has such an incredible cockpit! I use my mouse on the supercharger lever (grip it and push up!) and it has always worked for me.

I also think route planning is important and taking an unpredictable or unexpected route to the target can pay off. Talking to Ezzie last night, he would seem to agree. He planned to hit the LW airfield at Pihen but rather than going straight in from the Channel (the predictable route...infested with 109's!) he flew south to the Somme Estuary from west of Dungeness (English Point) and came up on the target from the south, achieving a wizard prang.

This 'round about' route may not appeal to everybody, as it can take more time than we have available, but if we had a large enough force we could split into major and minor (diversionary) raids.

If I don't make it on Thursday...Good luck to the Wimpey Wallies! Knock 'em bandy, Bubba! Salute!

Just keep in mind that the grid coordinates of this map do not always correspond to the in-game map grid coordinates. This will depend on how the mission builder would have created his grid... unfortunately there is no commonly agreed standard.

Yes, it arrived yesterday afternoon. Works great, no issues.

Re-assigning axis and buttons like crazy. It’s a great way of familiarizing oneself with the multitude of controls in a Wimpey. Discovered I had a toggle switch AND an axis co-assigned to open/close the bomb bay doors. Explains why my bombs didn’t drop on Caffiers airfield - the axis over rode the toggle switch! Oh well!

I had assigned turret duty to a second joystick (TM16000) for yaw (twist axis) and elevation (Y axis), plus trigger for Fire Current Weapon. Worked OK on practice missions but found under fire I suffer from brain freeze, get completely addled, and find myself yelling “MOMMY!!!!” because I’d get confused between one stick (flying) and the other (turret). Then I realized that any serious turret gunnery (for me, at least) is done under Mode 22 autopilot. Same goes for target-spotting using front turret per Ezzie’s technique. Might as well use the same joystick since in Mode 22 the flight controls are not affected by joystick inputs anyway. Under duress the Keep It Simple Stupid principle works best for this addle-brain. LOL

I’ve used blank templates for each of my peripherals to keep track of key/axis assignments. Eventually I’ll strike on the best setup and get to know them by heart - which is by far best. But, hey, having fun getting there!
