I thought I had thoroughly read the Wellington Flash Card throughout.....but I had missed a vital bit of advice that was given on it,re the turret gunnery, this being the target gun's convergence.
The advice is to set your turret gun's convergence to 400 metres.....the default is only set at 100 metres,so after doing this I then today set myself up with a 'Full Mission Builder' mission, with basically me at 2000 metres Alt and a Bf109 on my tail, same Alt of 2000.
When the mission started up I flew straight and level for a short period of time, before altering my gyro to '0' and going into Mode 22,I then immediately moved into the rear gunner's position, switched on the gunsight's illumination, switched on the turret control F10,and finally leaned into the gunsight 'Numpad 9'.
After waiting a short period of time,in he came as expected, and he looked as if he would'nt stop in his pursuit, but at what I thought was a close enough range I opened upon him.....I was amazed,as I actually shot him down, now I'm no hot shot, and never have been in all honesty, one of the reasons I fly bombers.
Anyway, thinking this to be just a fluke I restarted the mission only to do it again,in fact I flew this small exercise nine times, and every time I got lucky.
This all had to be done using the mouse,to control the gun axis, right handed, whilst firing the machine gun left handed, all a bit cack handed as I'm right handed, but it worked.
Now,on Saturday night when flying our bomber sortie, because I was the tail end Charlie,I got picked on by the 109's,and had about three engagements where I had to take to my gun's to defend myself, but because I only had the default convergence set up,my efforts were pathetic at best,in short I had no chance. Finally whilst on the last leg home, mid Channel I got completely shot up and had to bailout.
So in short, that convergence of 400 metres, horizontal and vertical definitely in my opinion, makes night and day difference to your chances in defending yourself and staying alive......obviously why the chaps over at TFS put this bit of advice into the Wimpy Flash Card.
I apologise in advance if I'm teaching my Grandmother to suck eggs on this issue chaps.....but there are a lot of new guys learning the big bird at the moment,so I thought,if I'd missed this advice, maybe others may have done unknowingly too.
Stay safe......strike hard, but one thing......be sure to give the buggers a taste of British lead....they don't like it up 'em !
