    Speed and Altitude

Not blessed with 20/20 vision and wondering if anyone knows how to display speed and altitude in the info window? That would be a huge help in landing and flying in general instead of squinting at the cockpit instruments. I have looked at the how to guides and video but cannot a mention of this unless I missed it.

If you have a second (or third) monitor take a look at virtual cockpit.

you can put the cockpit dials on a second screen as large as you like.

I use it on a tiny screen to just show the compas which in RAF planes is in front of the stick and very hard to see.

That sounds like a good idea now hat I have a 32 inch TV to use as a monitor I could use my laptop screen for that. I guess I could also put my Teamspeak there so I would always know who is saying what as well.

    Re: Speed and Altitude

I suspect it would be much cheaper to buy some prescription glasses for the distance your monitor is from your eyes. Getting old is a trip we all must take...

The distance is usually dictated by your cockpit setup. With a center stick mounted between your knees, you may have to sit back more, so the stick doesn't hit the desk. With side sticks, you can sit closer. Sitting closer will "enlarge" the smallest picture element you can perceive and will help you spot distant objects. Whatever you choose, settle on a distance before getting close vision glasses because a change of even a few inches will put things out of focus.

Using the game's cockpit is more immersive but requires some practice to develop skill at it. It's just like real flying. Additional monitors are completely unrealistic but may improve game play for non-flyers (Simulated). It doesn't take any more time to look at a second monitor than it does to scan the instruments. A good head tracker allows you to see all the instruments, again, with a little practice.

It's just a video game, but many of us are drawn to the realism of the CLoD simulator.

I think it also depends on what a person is used to. In my journey through umpteen flight simulators over 3 decades and later since about 2004, I have come to appreciate scenery much more than realism. I have taken off, flown and landed around the globe in chase view basically by feel for years in Aerofly FS2 and before that FSX and previous MSFS offerings. This is very different and I have appreciated the outstanding assistance of all members who have helped me.

You really are a great bunch.

Oh and PS. for Baffin I have an appointment with my optometrists this afternoon generated in part by my experience with this sim.

I too enjoy CLoD sightseeing on my 'puter. But when I want to play pilot, I like the realism approach so glasses are a must for me!

Hi AOB. Do you have Teamspeak Notifier installed yet? I am not sure if Bubba or someone else may have mentioned this to you. If you have then ignore the following. TS Notifier lets you see a list of names of other pilots that you may be flying with. For example I am with the Wellington Squadron so whilst I am flying with other members of the unit,( or any escorts we may have with us) I can see in the top right hand of my screen who's flying with us and more importantly who is talking. You can change the colour and size of the type face on your screen to suit. Also the position so it is not too intrusive.

It's a must for better communication.

    All the best

    Hi
AOB, I use virtual pilot with a 10 inch monitor with two cougar MFDs , with a bit of trial and error you can set it up for different aircraft, in the pic below is set for a spitfire and shows water and oil temps, rpm, mph, alt and compass. flying without VP is more immersive as Baffin pointed out, however I find it invaluable particularly when flying British aircraft, due to compasses being difficult to read, because of their positioning.

I dont think that Virtual pilot has been updated for the new aircraft in Tobruk

Hi Jack. Those Cougar MFDs look brilliant. Can I ask you are they difficult to configure in Cliffs? I am really struggling with the compass in the Wimpy and I can't see the giro without keeping the mouse over it all the time. Just had a look on line and they seem to be about £80 here.

    Re: Speed and Altitude

    Flak boss,
no the MFDs work perfectly with cliffs, set up as you would any controller, the mdfs are just square shaped button panels, the virtual pilot is displayed on the ten inch monitor(purchased separately, about €100, and not part of the MFDS ) below the MFDs. to get the display to fit, the cockpit.ini file needs to be edited as it is this file which determines the size and position of instrument displays on your monitor. it is easy enough to do, but tedious.

I dont have any profile for newer aircraft, including welly ( I use a profile for the blennie). I am going to try create some new profiles soon(be advised I have a serious procrastination problem).

Thanks Jack for your advise on this.

Also thanks for sticking with us Welly wallies on Sunday on the Caen raid. It must have been hard work for you guys staying with us bus drivers all the way there and back.
