    Video resolution vs FPS

    After updates, I found my game video set to 3K x 2K. Things seemed a bit choppy. Set it back to 1900 x 200. Hopefully it will be smoother. Any comments or other settings? I have a Nvidia Geforce 1060 6GB

    setting the FPS output of your gpu to match the refresh rate of your monitor or TV (if using) might help

    Hiya Gerald1013

    I have the same 1060 6GB card as you and have just upgraded screen to 1440p myself and found it can cope.
    Blitz and Tobruk look even better and still smooth on my antiquated i5 2500k system.

    Like JackMaxx, I have always had my in game video resolution and refresh rate set to exactly same settings as my monitor windows native display resolution etc and never found any problem.

    Interestingly my game video settings have never changed after any update so not sure what happened to yours.

    Try and stick to the native monitor settings for best results.

    Hi Rontaila.
    It’s 165hz native @1440p using DP.
    Model Dell 2721 dgfa

    Late Christmas present as spent ages waiting for restock and after reading reviews this was top of my list and a good price.
    Really happy with it and good for work too.

    Just need to gradually replace the rest of my rig when the PC market improves.

    Thanks for the answer Slot,
    I have a 32 "Gigabyte with 2560x1440 at 165 Hz DP but I lowered the resolution to 1920x1080 @ 120Hz because the game crashes. And I had problems whit spotting .

    Re: Video resolution vs FPS

    Slot, and rontilia, It is interesting to read about your high refresh rates with the 1060 6GB card, as that is what I have. I decided to upgrade my PC in the long term, and also wanted to upgrade the monitor. GPU’s are super expensive now, you can easily spend $2k, $3k, $4k and higher. I want to keep the 1060 for a time after the new PC is built (later this year), based on what I see on this tread I think that is a good idea for me now.

    By the way, Molders thread on Nvidia settings was very helpful to me, I see contacts much better now at 1080p. Get this.... I logged every setting that has to do with video on my system, that was the GPU, the monitor (a TV), the PC (Windows 10) and the game (Cliffs), there was a total of 82 settings!! No wonder it was so hard.

    Re: Video resolution vs FPS

    No worries.

    rontaila, I was already using Erpr.Gr.210_Mölders excellent settings and was going to link his original post but he beat me too it. They work and he deserves much credit for sharing these.

    They really helped me with spotting on both my old 1080p monitor and my new 1440p one. I have definitely benefitted as i could never spot people early enough but this at least makes it more equal.

    Try them out as i think they make a really big difference.
    (The only think i can't decide on is the setting "full or pseudo" in the Blitz video settings as i don't know what this does).

    Little Bill, I am doing the same as you and waiting. I want to build a new PC but prices are stupid crazy. The 1060 is getting a little long in the tooth but fine for 1080p and can cope with 1440p with medium settings. It was a good buy and has served me very well. Not quite ready to retire it for that 3060ti yet!

    Blitz and Tobruk still work great on older hardware and i don't have any other 'modern' games anyway.

    I can't add much because I barely understand any technical stuff and am thankful never having had issues.
    However I did some time ago experience occasional trackir tearing running in Full screen but not in Pseudo. Whether there's any relation I'm unclear, but I've continued using Pseudo as I find it transitions quicker/smoother/easier to/from desktop when I need to access another program or page. I run an ASUS ROG laptop into a Samsung tv utilising both screens.
    I recall experimenting to come to these conclusions, but since then I haven't dared touch what's already working.

    I was going to ask during one of our flights as it always intrigued me.

    Re: Video resolution vs FPS

    Pretty much, IIRC, it works in this way:

    Windowed = Game displayed in a desktop window. Yoi can adjust the size of it editing the .ini conf file.

    Full Screen = Better quality of the image at the cost of some FPS loss. Due to this, even if the game runs fine from time to time ( and especially in busy situations ) you can notice/experience some micro-stutters.

    Pseudo = Half way between the full quality and the medium quality of the image ( but still quite good ) and slightly more FPS friendly in respect to Full Screen.
    In addition in Full Screen mode some of the buttons used to connect/play online do not work anymore/as planned ( I didn't check if TFS have fixed it so take this bit of information with the pincers ).
    This is the default mode I use. It guarantees a good image quality without hitting the FPS and it suits my preferences at best.
    Best ratio between image quality/FPS/game smoothness, at least on my PC.

    Re: Video resolution vs FPS

    In addition in the game proprierties, under boot options, you can use this string ( Do it only if you know what you are doing! ) to improve the performances of the game: ( COPY IT EXACTLY AS IT IS; CASE AND SPACES SENSITIVE !!! )

    -refresh 60-maxMem=16000-malloc=system-USEALLAVAILABLECORES-high-

    Edit the refresh rate and the maxMem parameters accordingly to your PC specs. Example:

    -refresh 144-maxMem=13000-malloc=system-USEALLAVAILABLECORES-high-

    If you notice any kind of problems, simply delete the above string and your game will return to run exactly as it was before you added the string.

    Description

    -refresh 144

    This will force the refresh rate and the above would only apply if you play on a 144hz monitor. Adjust the number to accommodate your setup.

    -maxMem=13000

    This controls the maximum amount of RAM to allocate to the game. If you have 16GB of RAM and wish to allocate 13GB, then the input you’d place after the equal sign would be 13000.

    -malloc=system

    This will let your operating system decide the amount of memory to use while the game is running.

    -high

    This will let your game will start in high priority mode.This can also be achieved by changing your Priority for IL-2 Blitz/Desert Wings in the Task Manager.

    -USEALLAVAILABLECORES

    This does exactly as it specifies. This will ensure that all of your CPU cores are being used while running the game.

    @ Little Bill, my rig is the one in the signature and I don't think I'll change it soon, I'm not interested in playing VR .I don't have an annoying decrease in fps
    @ Mölders, thanks for your work and time to improve the way this game can be played and for sharing it with others. I'm not good at programming and I will ask an ignorant question: how do I find game properties? Now I use most of the settings you posted.
    Another question is: have you changed anything in the conf.ini?
    What I noticed that during the game in certain positions compared to my plane, targets do not appear in the right shape and size at a relatively small distance, about 4km and if I move my head I can see the correct shape and size, ie I can see if it is a bomber or a single-engine aircraft.
    Thanks again for the answers and help

    Not at all mate I'm glad that the settings I've suggested can be of help for the members of the community!
    Reply to your question #1: Open Steam then go to the Library where all your game are listed. Search and then select IL-2 Blitz and right click on it with the mouse then select " Proprierties " from the cascade menu that will open ( Proprierties menu is the last one at the bottom ).

    Reply to your question #2: Nope not any major changes. I have added only in the cfg.ini file the string to control the zoom in/out speed and the confUsers.ini to have the zoom buttons duplicated so to be able to use the zoom both with the right and left hand and I've inverted the mouse movement.

    The string to control the zoom speed is this:

    ZoomSpeed=6

    Add it at the bottom of the [core] section in the conf.ini file ( Use notepad to open the file then save it ). The higher the number, the higher the zoom speed. Numbers below 6 will slow down the speed. IIRC the default setting is 5.

    Here is a copy of my [core] section as reference:
    Code:
    [core]
    RandSeed = 0
    TexQual=3
    TexFlags.PolygonStipple=0
    Shadows=1
    SpecularLight=2
    DiffuseLight=2
    DynamicalLights=1
    MeshDetail=2
    LandShading=2
    LandDetails=2
    Sky=3
    Forest=0
    VisibilityDistance=3
    LandGeom=2
    DrawCollisions=1
    Water=-1
    Effects=2
    EffFlags.Light=1
    EffFlags.SpriteRender=0
    Grass=-1
    CordEffect=1
    UseFog=0
    UseLandCube=1
    UseLandConnectedObject=1
    LinearObjectManager=1
    Roads=1
    Sun=1
    Clouds=1
    EffFlags.LightSpritesProj=1
    ShadowMapSize=5
    TexFlags.AsyncLoad=1
    TexFlags.ShowTexture=0
    SimpleMesh.SWTransform=0
    SimpleMesh.QuadTreeClip=1
    SimpleMesh.InstancingHW=1
    EffFlags.LightContextSprites=1
    CloudsFlags.Detailed=1
    TexFlags.CreateHDR=1
    Decals=2
    EffFlags.SWLight=0
    TexFlags.CockpitOnePass=0
    MegaTexture=0
    TexFlags.Reflection=0
    RenderTargetQual=3
    MSAA=0
    MeshStatics=3
    MeshStaticsDetail=3
    SimpleMesh.QTNoCompose=0
    MeshFirstLod=0
    MeshShowLod=0
    SpawnHumans=0
    AntiAlias=0
    FXAA.Quality=6
    SMAA.EdgeDetection=1
    SMAA.Preset=3
    TexFlags.SSAO=0
    TexFlags.VSync=1
    ExtendedClouds=0
    StaticsShadows=0
    Tessellation=0
    ZoomSpeed=6
    VisDistActorStatics=1
    To invert the mouse movement:
    Code:
    [rts_mouse]
    SensitivityX=1.0
    SensitivityY=1.0
    SensitivityZ=1.0
    Invert=1            ---> 1= Inverted; 0= Default
    SwapButtons = 0
    Strings modified to have double commands in the confUser file about the zoom: ( Note that you have to insert your device IDs to let them work and that you can double only certain controls not all of them! For the zoom levels it works for other commands you have to try and check ).
    With the strings below I have the zoom in/out both on my throttle ( Left hand ) and on the mouse ( Right hand ) so in the Bf 110 I can quickly use it with both hand independently if I'm in the pilot or gunner position.
    Code:
    [HotKey viewSet]
    TWCS_Throttle-1126EC41+Key8=fov+
    TWCS_Throttle-1126EC41+Key6=fov-
    MouseMiddle=fov-
    MouseLeft=fov+
