Announcement of Graphics Update for CLIFFS OF DOVER - BLITZ and DESERT WINGS - TOBRUK

    Hello All

We had hoped to have more news on our new module in April, but at this point it looks like mid May will be the announcement.

What we can announce is our planning in regards to a package of Graphics Updates for CLIFFS OF DOVER - BLITZ and DESERT WINGS - TOBRUK.

We hope these improvements will be ready for summer 2021. We had originally planned these for the Spring, but with the effects of Covid and other factors on TF's ability to work this has not been possible. This time line is subject to revision if there are further setbacks in the pandemic situation.

These improvements will be free to owners of these games.

Below is the list of new features:

    - Addition of the trueSKY cloud and weather system. (with new water and effects)

    - Addition of 4k cockpit resolution for aircraft

    - Addition of 4k resolution for aircraft external models (optional in player settings)

    - Upgrading of all terrain tiles to 4k resolution as well as improvements to the terrain textures, especially those on the TOBRUK map

    - Improvement of Terrain Tessellation effects. (this effect is what gives a three dimensional effect to terrain surfaces)

    - Increase of the player view distance by up to 10 times current view distances. This is the distance at which objects begin to appear to the player... and will reduce the 'popup' effect sometimes seen for distant buildings, terrain features, objects, etc. (optional in player settings)

We will release these elements as a package... in a 'Re-Launch' which will be promoted on STEAM and other venues.

We think these changes will significantly upgrade the game graphically and bring it up to a standard which players will appreciate and enjoy.

We will provide images and video on this forum and through our other media sites as we come closer to release.

Awesome stuff! 4K skins is a big one.

Any potential WIP screenies of the new clouds and water? That stuff is really exciting as well. And will the increased view distance also increase the view of environmental smoke plumes?

We will release updates as soon as we have something worthwhile showing.

Right now the images we can show of trueSKY are all low rez working model versions and would not be impressive.

Hi Buzzsaw. This sounds promising. I'm looking forward to it. If the changes cause significant demands on players' computers can they be dialed down so the game plays like it does now? I'm sure there are a few players like me who'd like to get a new video card but they are hard to come by right now. Thanks.

Some of the changes as for example the viewing distance can be dialled down for those with weaker computers.

The trueSKY addition should actually allow the game to run more efficiently as the changes allow more balanced sharing between the player's CPU and GPU.

Reduction of the pop-up effect, one of the longest running irritations in CloD....can't wait to see the render bubble finally killed off. Well done team.

    This is great news.
Can trueSKY handle dynamic weather? Like rain starting during a mission.

Will this change minimum equipment requirements for viewing all the new features? Do we need to plan upgrades to our computer systems to enjoy all the new bells and whistles?

Well in case of a new RTX3080 graphic card you have to pay serious money.

    - Upgrading of all terrain tiles to 4k resolution as well as improvements to the terrain textures, especially those on the TOBRUK map

    - Improvement of Terrain Tessellation effects. (this effect is what gives a three dimensional effect to terrain surfaces)

I have hopes that these two features will help me with landings in Tobruk, I damage the plane way more often there than elsewhere. Thanks for the exciting news!

trueSKY should actually reduce the load on the player's CPU by spreading the load to the GPU... right now the clouds and weather are all handled by the CPU, in trueSKY they are handled by the GPU.

And in regards to the other new features, some of the more demanding ones, (like view distance) will be selectable by the player... so you don't have to increase the range at which objects appear if you don't want to.

Question: Does this load assignment to GPU have anything to do with Nvidia's "PhysX" feature? Are there any Nvidia configuration issues involved?

    From NVidia site:
PhysX is a scalable multi-platform game physics solution
    Nothing to do with clouds.

    Hi all,
but in that way, trueSky done by the GPU, it is more in charge now. I would think when the job is done by both, CPU + GPU, it would be better? You see, I have no knowledge of these things.
But a great announcement, I guess long awaited for all those eye-candy-addicted of us

The main one for me is the Player View Distance...This was the one main issue for me that i had regarding Ilya's ill fated patches..
Now hoping that a lot of stuff that was thrown out with the baby and the bath water can be reintegrated back

There are lots of pictures and videos from the beta around in which you can see the 4k textures of aircraft skins and cockpits, terrain, truesky etc.

That's all well and good but what most of us want is these upgrades actually working in our game, and make this great sim even more immersive we are not getting any younger lol!

Re: Announcement of Graphics Update for CLIFFS OF DOVER - BLITZ and DESERT WINGS - TO

I said to myself I wasn't going to comment on this but it kinda irks me the wrong way. I keep seeing this in all sorts of forums with all sorts of software and I don't really get it.

That's not how software development works for any piece of software out there. In its most basic of form each feature requires a number of hours in a particular skill set to develop. Let's define this as Y.
So you have X number of people who need to put in Y number of hours. Now for the sake of argument let's put Y at 50,000. The more people you have the more you reduce the total time so if a development team were to have say 10,000 people they could get all features done in 5 hours.
We have to consider that Y also includes full testing and bug hunting in a hypothetical final release that is flawless. So the way in which you reduce or increase total time is either by increasing the number of people or cutting back on development. Increase X or lower Y.
Considering that this is an excessively realistic WWII flight simulator it sits in a very niche market. One that will never nurture the creation of a development team in the hundreds or thousands (not even if they sell each plane for 50 euro).
So of you can't increase X you have to reduce Y. Obviously you can't cut development time in core places because the software wouldn't run at all. So you have to do it in the testing, bug hunting and detailing. If you cut too much into Y the release will be buggy, unstable and ulgy in places.

I started playing this in 2023 so I don't know how it was or how it looked or how it ran 10 years ago. Buuuuut in about 100 hours of playtime I haven't had a single CTD, no graphical glitches that I can remember, no screen locks, no unexplained frame drops nothing.
This kinda blew my mind. Nothing ruins my immersion more than crashes, frame drops, glitches, freezes, etc.

Now I understand that you want more and it's perfectly reasonable to want more but I advise you to run the math and be careful what you ask for... rushed releases is how software gets ruined.

Oh I certainly want to see all this working in game too.
I'd also love X-mas to start on Monday and last a whole week.

But since (as has been stated over and over) all this will come in one package and will be free for all owners of Cliffs (plus the fact that all TFS members are doing this work for us in their spare time and receive next to nothing for it) I feel that a bit of patience is quite appropriate.
