November 23rd, 1942. Nine months after the Kido Butai's devastating attack on Darwin, the town is still under attack from Japanese forces. At 0505 hours, three Mitsubushi G4M Betties bomb the town despite heavy anti-aircraft fire. Two minutes later, Squadron Leader Dick Cresswell of No. 77 SQN, flying Kittyhawk Mk.IA A29-113, engaged the bombers and shot one down, becoming the first Australian pilot to score a victory over Australian soil, as well as the first pilot to score a night victory over Australia. Cresswell would go on to become the first commander of a RAAF jet squadron when 77 converted to the Gloster Meteor in 1951 - this was the third time Cresswell was given command of the squadron.
Cresswell's sortie, as recorded in No. 77 SQN's operations records book, can be found on page 53 of this document: https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/Sear...=1358995&T=PDF
This mission recreates that sortie, allowing you to fly both as Cresswell and as a Betty pilot.
A note about the Japanese briefing; in WWII, Japanese years were not based on the birth of Jesus Christ as they were in the West, but on the reign of Emperor Jimmu, which began in 660 BCE. In this system, 1942 was 2602.
