Almost done with the encoder controller board...after I generate gerbers I'll work on the switch controller board. Quadrant and trim boards are simple, so they are ready to go:

Can you make it without a usb-cable, but with a usb socket to fit either of the cables in the photo below? Thanks.

Well, this is actually going to be part of a larger assembly, which as you might have guessed, will be a set of Cessna 172 controls. I'm not big on just flying around in a civvy aircraft, but apparently there are a LOT of people who are, so I figure I ought to make a product for that segment. I might make this stand-alone with it's own USB controller, in which case it would probably have a USB mini connector like you show here. I would have to come up with some kind of clamping mechanism to mount this to a desk, or sell it with just the faceplate so it could be mounted to a control panel. As you can probably tell, this is basically a reworking of my current trim control, just with a bigger wheel to emulate the trim on the Cessna.
I learned just last night that ClOD currently has a limit of just 8 USB controls, so I am generally hesitant to dedicate an entire USB port to just one control.

    Regards,

    Kendy

Here's the stand-alone version of the Cessna trim wheel, which is now available. I've modified my standard trim wheel with a bigger bezel and bigger trim wheel. The internals are basically the same as the old trim wheel. Will be incorporating this into a larger assembly soon, with throttle, mixture, etc. and some buttons and encoders. Basically all the controls you will need to fly a Cessna in MSFS2020, except for the control yoke and rudder pedals.

    SpaceClaim_bEhbhvHSzl.png IMG_20210903_140855058.jpg

For the full assembly, the housing is pretty much figured out, but I'm not sure how I'm going to attach it to the rest of the assembly. Also, I might do a rounded front bezel to more closely match what I see on the model in MSFS 2020.

Yes, that is the rack for the rack and pinion indicator. The pinion gear butts up against the inside of the indicator frame, and I've also recently changed the bracket so the outside edge if the indicator frame stops against the protrusion if the bracket...so double-duty.

Glad to hear you like it. Those encoders can be used for something as simple as changing illumination of the gunsight to adjusting the gyrocompass or course plotter or even gusight range. I can't believe it took me so long to incorporate them into my designs.

Hi Kendy My Trimbox arrived a couple of weeks ago A Birthday present from my son.
I have been busy fine tuning for CLOD and DCS as said a plug and play I put it into a USB 3 port and it works great.
As far as the encoders go Iam getting 12 functions per plane plus the trim wheels.
It works really well in DCS especially in the luftwaffe - no hands flying

Received my Trim controller with switches yesterday, set it up easily plug and play. I am impressed by the sensitifty and I think adds to the immersion, Well done Kendy

Re: Prototypes for some new products

After three months of hard daily use my Gear Falcon trim box continues to work great. My left hand is continuously on the trim wheels. They work fine with DCS and BoX as well.

I've been working with Oskar on the Flat Loop Radio Compass. He got it working (Wellington, Beaufighter, and BR.20) and the encoders are dynamite for switching frequencies and adjusting the angle of the FLRC. (Keyboard keys work fine as well, but the encoders just feel more immersive and allow a bit better eyes-off manipulating). Actually, I've been using the encoders (both their twist function and push button feature) for a bunch of stuff. Really handy when repetitive keystrokes are needed ie FLRC; next I'm going to try the MODE22 adjust direction left or right to line up the bombsight on target.

Tons of fun! (And it's cool factor is way up there )

Re: Prototypes for some new products

I finally got around to finishing up some min-Quadrants...it's not my favorite, as the quadrant levers are pretty small, but I think it would be good for someone who doesn't have much space, or has to travel a lot.

    https://www.etsy.com/listing/1087260...e_feat_4&frs=1

Also working on a Cessna control panel. I'm torn as to whether I need to include a prop pitch control, as neither the 152 nor the 172 have variable props. So far just getting the spacing and layout set up, haven't really worked on the mechanical bits yet. There will be a flaps switch on the right side, and the trim control will be relocatable so it can be clamped to the top or the bottom of a desk. I bought some slide potentiometers to try out, but I'm very leery of them... they seem extremely fragile, and move too easily, so they'd need some sort of braking mechanism. I'll probably end up with some sort of rack and pinion setup with my standard rotary pots. It will use a full 8/36 joystick controller, with some breakout connectors on the back for connecting external pots and switches if desired.

Small aircraft elevator trim wheel with desk mount clamp. Finished this part, for those who like to fly Cessna aircraft on MSFS 2020. No USB controller for it yet (coming soon!) so it will need to be connected to an external joystick controller.

Almost there on the small aircraft TPM. Optional trim wheel will slot into either the top or the bottom, so it can be configured to mount on top of the desk or under. Mounting mechanism will slot into the opposite side.

I recommend the prop control so one can simulate the Cessna 177 or 206. Complex controls are required for commercial and/or Instructor ratings. It will also serve as a "Make do" for others like Spitfire, etc.

It would also be helpful to be able to mount it on either the left or the right since solo sits on the left while the Instructor is on the right when flying dual.

For realism, make the prop control with a vernier feature. (Twist to fine tune)

The clamp should allow for positioning anywhere...it is also symmetrical so it could be flipped over if needed to reverse position of the controls. As far as the vernier control, I've given it a lot thought, and cannot figure out how to easily accomplish that. I'll keep thinking about it, and maybe something will come to me.

Re: Prototypes for some new products

Here's a little update to my earlier review of the Gear Falcon Trim Controller which I posted here:

    https://theairtacticalassaultgroup.c...l=1#post374462

In a subsequent back-and-forth email discussion with Kendy, he very generously shipped me a clamp-on version of the same unit for me to evaluate. As with the earlier table top unit, shipping took about a week with constant status updates coming to me by email via Etsy.

Functionally, it is identical to the table top unit I had originally purchased and reviewed. The clamp-on unit costs a little more due to the clamping mechanism, plus the larger overall body size to accommodate the desk clamp. The controls themselves (trim wheels and encoder buttons) are no different whatsoever from the table top unit. That said, I prefer the clamp-on version for a couple of reasons:

    1) Although noticeable larger in body size than the table top version, I found with my desk design that the trim wheels were a little closer at hand than the table top unit. Your mileage may vary, depending on what size desk/table top surface your virtual cockpit has. Actually, those with really cramped virtual cockpits would possibly find the table top version preferable. Anyone who flies the Clod Spitfire knows that constant trimming, especially rudder trim, is the order of the day. I would rank these trim wheels second only to the joystick in terms of overall use. I'm always making fine adjustments to keep the yaw centered (rudder trim), plus the pitch (elevator) trim adjusted to allow for greater hands-off flying. The aileron trim is a bonus for those of us flying multi-engined aircraft. The Gear Falcon Trim Controls allow for very fine, very precise adjustments.

    2) The clamp-on version has a flat upper surface. I don't know about you, but I have a devil of a time trying to remember what I've assigned to my myriad of TM Warthog, CH Quadrant, and now the Gear Falcon buttons, switches, wheels, etc etc etc. After much head scratching, I finally figured out a way of quickly determining which does what on my Gear Falcon encoders, especially considering I have a bunch of control profiles depending on which aircraft I'm flying. Changing profiles, even during gameplay, is quite easy - remembering what the buttons do is something else for my less-than-a-steel trap memory. I simply went to the local Office Supply, bought some 4"x6" index cards, then went hi-tech and used a rubber band to hold it in place. Easy to switch out index cards whenever you change profiles! Take a look:

Elegant and it works! (I need to do something similar for my CH Quadrant...another head scratcher at times).

Finally, I've had a blast testing this unit both in Single Player and Multiplayer. The Gear Falcon Trim Controller has withstood several months of panicked, feverish, hamfisted manipulation. Several points:

    a) The encoders are darn handy, especially if you're flying a bomber and need to make course corrections when in Mode 22 to bring your bomb sight onto target, or twiddling the Fixed Loop Radio Compass controls while in flight. It can be accurately argued that a keyboard can do anything that the encoders can do. This makes sense, since the encoders by definition emulate keyboard strokes. I just find the encoders very handy to manipulate and easy to find when you don't want to take your eyes off your monitor during the course of your maneuvering. Probably even more handy when wearing VR headsets (VR is coming!).

    b) The trim wheels are worth their weight in gold for fine adjustments. I've tried using the CH Quadrant axis but they were too coarse for the fine adjustments that Spitfires require on an almost continuous basis. I like how each trim wheel has its own centering mark to make it easy to go to neutral trim as reference when spawning into a new aircraft.

    c) As I and others have found, for the Gear Falcon trims to be recognized by the in-game Control GUI when you assign them, you have to turn each trim wheel to its FULL max/min deflection. We're used to the GUI detecting other axis (joystick, throttle, etc) with just a slight deflection of the axis. Not the Gear Falcon controllers! When assigning each trim axis, turn those little suckers to maximum each way for the GUI to pick 'em up!

    d) One of the other players that got the clamp-on Trim Controller found an ingenious way to attach it to his conventional office desk. He simply pulled open the left hand lower drawer (the one that's usually big enough to hold file folders) and clamped it on to the side of the drawer facing him. Easy to attach, easy to remove afterward.

The clamp-on Gear Falcon Trim Controller: RECOMMENDED

Thanks for the glowing review, Snapper!
I see you have a CH quadrant on the desk too...have you taken a look at my deskmount Quadrant controller (QQ4)? Like the QT3 Trim module, it also comes with switches or encoders, and has adjustable length levers.
