Halycon Days - CoD - ACG - But Peter Larry Screenshots

This is played every year at the BoB Mess Dinner here at RAF 10 Group HQ (RAF Rudloe Manor).

Guest of Honour this year is Paddy Hemmingway (85 Squadron). The last surviving RAF BoB pilot - he is 102. Can't wait to meet you on the 13th Sep, sir.

Cliffs of Dover - AI Squadrons.

I forgot to mention. How many of you know that Peter Larrys Grandfather was the chief test pilot for the Fw190?

    Hallo Nails,
Oh what an honour. Thank you!
Here is another interesting picture in connection with Paddy Hemingway. I have here a trio of Hurricanes from 85 Sqn. In the foreground is Hurricane VY-T (P3966), Paddy's Maschine in which he was shot down on 26 August 1940 and had to parachute out. The other machines are VY-R (P2923) P/O Dickie Lee, and Lt. J.E.Marshal in VY-D (P3649). Perhaps there will be an opportunity to show the picture

    DLL HQ Picture for presenting:

A rare picture of Pilots (and TIME LIFE Photographer) of No 85 Sqn at RAF Debden airfield, July 1940.

Pete - he already knows of your interest in his Squadron. Knows you have their diary from 85 Sqn the day he bailed out, but then went back up a few days later (28th Aug), then got shot up again, and bailed again. But still kept on comming!

With a bit of luck, I will get him to sign your screenshot (on Photo Glossy Paper) and send it to you. I think I still have your address from when I sent you the 85 Sqn diary.

That Sgt Pilot 3rd from left looks spookily like John "The Cockney Sparrow" Mortimer - The only thing they found of him was his left foot. He was only 19 - KIA 01 September 1940.

2018 (pre-Covid) my modest BoB collection of artificats.

I digress a bit, when I put on display Wing Commander Guy Gibsons 617 Squadron personal Logbook.

Also in the backround, is James Brindley Nicholsons VC - Only one of the BoB! On the far left of the table, is a P9 compass from an 85 Squadron, Hurricane.

I had 72 individual BoB pilot portraits on display, all signed by their respective owners. Now, there is only one left - Paddy Hemmingway.

The Pyramid Phone on the far right is from the Ops Room at RAF Tangmere - Probably used the day Billy Fiske passed away.

A bit further back, including my fully populated (original instruments) Hawker Hurricane MkI instrument panel

Everyone moved forward, then to the left (where the bar was), then passed through to the Dining Room!

After telling the RAF, that where they actually work was RAF 10 Group during the battle. The Sqn Ldr, organising the dinner went into the tunnels and found the Command Board.

The Aluminium Spitfire on the turntable is mine.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us, Nails! We are honoured that you posted these fabulous photos and shared a bit of background about them. Thanks, too, to Peter Larry for contributing his portrayal of Paddy Hemingway's flight just going wheels up on another sortie.

If it wasn't for ATAG or ACG or Danger Dogz or any of the other forums keeping their names alive - there would be nothing.

Thank you all, don't thank me.

Ian Gleeds Figaro the Cat he had on the side of his Hurricane - Also painted on his Spitfire. I own this.

Wing Commander Gleed was MIA, Malta 1943.

You have an incredible collection Nails.

I saw Pat Pattle's log book for sale a few years ago.

Would have loved to have been able to afford to buy it.

    Cheers and thanks for sharing.

I hear you. Nothing is affordable when it comes to 1940. So I sympathise Pattle.

I have a BoB Oval Gunsight from the Battle. I also have a Square Gunsight that arrived in December 1940. Just after the battle.

The pilots were complaining that the Oval glass distorted the reticule. So the boffins came up with the Square glass.

Guess which gunsight is worth £'s!

It is extremely humbling to think that anyone involved in the services actually appreciates our efforts.

Coming from a well respected, and CoD veteran, I thank you. To make my life complete I need Sokol, to give his blessings.

The ACG BOTE video has been played at the BoB Mess Dinners more than the orginial Battle of Britain. At least since 2014 - so thank you Bonkin.

The only regret within the movie is that I couldn't get some of the RAF Squadron Crests with the Kings Crown - If you look, you will see a lot of Squadrons are carrying the Queens Crown. I feel so ashamed.

The active squadrons - before they were (ahem) disbanded. Viva la 32 Squadron!

Pete L was flying with 111 Sqn.

    Finally, TM-B.

Flt Lt Ray Holmes (Pete Larry did a screenshot of TM-B ramming the Do17 on its way to Buckingham Palace).

As I fired, my ammunition gave out. I thought, Hell, he's got away now. And there he was coming along and his tail looked very fragile and very inviting. So I thought I'd just take off the tip of his tail. So I went straight at it along him and hit his port fin with my port wing. I thought, That will just take his fin off and he'll never get home without the tail fin. I didn't allow for the fact that the tail fin was actually part of the main fuselage. Although I didn't know it at the time, I found out later that I had knocked off the whole back half of the aircraft including the twin tails.

The time piece in the box above the TM-B (signed by a further 13 BoB pilots, including Ray) is a Christopher Ward watch cast from what remained of Rays Hurricane (Merlin engine) when it was dug up up in 1993. Only 100 watches in existence.

Re: Halycon Days - CoD - ACG - But Peter Larry Screenshots

Pete, resurrecting this thread as I have an update (also posted this over on ACG, and emailed you)!

I received an email from Brian Hemingway (Paddy Hemingway's son) this morning (25th July). Paddy Hemingway was 103 on the 17th July 22 - the last pilot that flew in the Battle of Britain. Hoping someone at ATAG might know the answer to his question too?

    Quote (sic):

    "Hi again,

Dad was very happy to receive your letter and image of 3 Hurricanes just taking off.

You may be aware P3966 has CAA approval for a flying restoration, and we are trying to authenticate the makings on the Hurricane. You have shown VY T. I am particularly keen to know if you can verify the T marking (what source etc) as accuracy if very important..

Any additional information on 85 Squadron to the above would be most welcome.

I appreciate you support and will keep Dad informed.

    All the best

    Brian

    Unquote

Paddy Hemingway received the "image of 3 Hurricanes" for signing (which I was going to send to you). He wants to know if you have any authenticity for P3966 bearing the Squadron code "T" (VY-T). The reason for this is when the restored P3966 is ready, they want to paint the aircraft as VY-T (if the code can be validated).

According to the 85 Squadron diary. Paddy Hemmingway was flying Hurricane P3966 on the 26/8 (the monthly summary for this date records the death of his aircraft, and Paddy's successful bale out). Throughout August though, he flew different aircraft (L1933, V7249, L2071 as well as P3966 which is being restored).

Frustratingly the start of the record gives the letters and their pilots! But no Hemmingway is listed before, they then just list Serial Numbers! Record also doesn't state what Serial No went with what Letter!

Over to you Pete - hope you can confirm the "T" code? I feel honoured that they have reached out to us about this.

Here is the photo that Paddy Hemingway received (for signing):

I asked if Paddy H recorded the Sqn Code for that day in his Flying Log Book - Alas he didn't (and he can't remember why)!

So Peter L - Can you provide any validation for P3966 bearing the Code VY-T please? Thanks in advance old friend.

Re: Halycon Days - CoD - ACG - But Peter Larry Screenshots

    Hello Dave,
First of all I would like to thank you for your PM and posts. Sorry for only responding now. I had to update myself a bit first, as it happened with the Hurricane P3966 and Paddy Hemmingway.
Unfortunately, I have to confess that I cannot witness the "T", i.e. the personal letter of the Hurricane P3966 VY-T as it can be seen on my screenshot.
    I wish I could.
It would be a great honour for me if the restored Hurricane P3966 would actually bear the "T". Which I chose for the following reason.
Paddy often flew in the B Flight of No 85 Squadron in 1940 (according to the logbook entries of No 85 Squadron that you kindly sent me). In fact, it was more likely to fly aircraft with the radio call letters of the second half of the ABC (M-Z). Then I excluded the Hurricanes, for which I already knew the individual letters and serial numbers. These were the following: M,N,O,Q,R,U,V,X,Y,and I know that Albert Lewis flew a few times with "Z for Zebra". Then I selected the letter "T" from the remaining ones. I know that doesn't prove anything. But it gave me the idea that Hurricane P3966 could possibly (!) be VY-T.
I'm sorry I can't ofer you more, except this personal little tale about Paddy's Hurricane.
