TWC Campaign Server (English Channel) pilot tips . . .

I've been flying the TWC Campaign Server (English Channel) lately and thought some pilots might not know some of the particularities of the server, especially some that might help in flying and reaching objectives.

#0. You can ask to join the private TWC Campaign forum on the ATAG server (request either Red or Blue) and/or the TWC Pilots forums. Both of these have a lot of info & tips for flying the TWC Campaign servers.

#1. Look for the spawn points on the edge of your map. They are VERY useful. These represent airports way off the map (that were actually used in the Battle of Britain etc) for high-altitude bombing & reconnaissance missions. What the spawn point represents is the (approximate) position and altitude that bombers or recon aircraft would have been at, at the time they entered our map.

Point is, you can fly a high-altitude bombing or recon mission by starting at those spawn points, while skipping the initial 1-2-3 hours real pilots would have taken to fly from a distant airfield and gain 20,000ft/6500m or so of altitude.

The purpose of these is to make high altitude bombing & recon missions more feasible for pilots. These were a big part of all phases of the war and with this high-alt spawn points you can fly a mission like that is say 45 minutes instead of 3 hours.

#2. Note that you CAN spawn in cover bombers and cover fighters from these high-altitude spawn points. You'll just need to circle the area of the spawn point while you get them all spawned in. They will spawn in at approximately your altitude.

#3. How to use the server radar (including online campaign radar map for each side) You'll need a radar password for your side, which you can get on the Red/Blue private forums on ATAG or the TWCPilots.com forums. (While flying, you can probably ask any other pilots active on your side, too. Just make sure to keep your side's password SECRET from pilots on the other side--illicitly looking at the other side's radar can give all sorts of useful intel).

This isn't just a radar map, but includes TONS of useful information about reconned objectives, their exact coordinate positions, which airfields and radar are out of commission, what your current primary and secondary objectives are, etc. All this info is available via the Tab-4 menu system but there is SO MUCH information no one can digest it via those tiny in-game screens. It's all far, far easier to use via the General Situation Map.

#4. Did you know you have airborne intercept radar as well? Tab-4-4-5 The display updates every few seconds. Your aircraft is represented by # and other aircraft by *. Just like real early WWII airborne radar, one side shows direction of the target relative to you and the other side shows altitude relative to you.

So you have to look at both sides, figure out which radar blip on the left side goes with which on the right side, and then you know that contact's position and altitude relative to you.

The radar looks only forward and down from you (well, it looks JUST A LITTLE upwards and backwards). So the higher you go, the more you can see. You will see the radar screens grow in size as you gain altitude and can see more.

I'm interested to hear if anyone is using this airborne intercept radar and what you think about it.

I've been using it now and then and find it super-useful. FYI this implementation was designed (and in WWII this was actually used) for night-time interception of bombers. For example, Beaufighters were outfitted and used this way with some good success. With night-time flying become more possible with TF upgrades, some night-time missions/campaigns could be interesting . . .

FYI for now it is available for all aircraft but historically realistic would be to allow it on large 2- or 3-crew non-bomber aircraft only (Beaufighters, 110s, Blenheim fighter, etc). The equipment was too bulky and heavy to fit in a one-man fighter. And too heavy to go in a bomber fully loaded with bombs, also.

#5. As a Bomber OR a Fighter pilot, you can lead a whole squadron of planes on bombing missions. This is called a "cover squadron" and you can find the full instructions for doing this here (or on the TWC forum here).

Bomber pilots can bring in several bombers and/or cover fighters to fly and bomb with them.

Fighter pilots can bring in a few bombers. The fighter pilot then flies cover for them while they bomb.

Both of these are a whole lot of fun. AND . . . the whole server is now based around these LARGE bombing raids led by breather pilots.

You use the Knickebein system to tell your cover bombers where to drop. You can take out both large area targets (industrial areas, etc) and small point targets using this system, if you know what you're doing.

#6. You can use TWC's Knickebein navigation system to find your way around the map and location targets/objectives. In fact, the whole campaign is based around this system. First you identify targets by reconnaissance flights; then HQ can use the recon photos to identify precise coordinates for mission objectives. You then use those coordinates (via Knickebein) to locate the target yourself AND to target your cover bombers.

You can find the coordinates via the Tab-4 menu system or via the TWC General Situation Map/Radar system.

#7. Just because radar isn't showing any enemy aircraft does NOT mean there are NO enemy aircraft.

Tab-4-1 radar and the General Situation Map are so easy and useful that sometimes we get over-reliant on them. There are a BUNCH of reasons why enemy contacts won't show up on radar:

    • Your radar is out. When the enemy knocks out a radar station, your radar goes out in that area until it's repaired. This can be 1-3 days or more. You can find out which radar installations are out via Tab-4 menu, the online General Situation Map listing of disabled radar/airports, or just by looking at your radar screen to see where a giant blank spot is.
    • The central radar communication center is out. Both sides have a central radar communications center. If the bad guys find and destroy your radar communications center, ALL RADAR is out for your side. And--it can be out for a few days.
    • The enemy is flying below radar. The lower you fly, the harder it is for radar to see you. If you're below 200-300ft/70-100m, you'll be invisible to radar--or partly invisible. The lower the better.
    • Radar mistakes or limitations. Radar operators are human, too. And they have a harder time tracking individual aircraft vs large formations. We've seen quite a number of single bombers slip through--some low and some high.

Point is, even if you see nothing on radar, it can still be very advantageous to fly patrols in areas the enemy is known to attack--along your coasts, etc. There are OFTEN aircraft and even large bomber formations trying to slip through unseen.

Tip: Airborne Intercept Radar comes in real handy in these situations. It is a small independent radar unit in your own aircraft, so it works even if the rest of the radar system is out.

#8. You can find the general--and get helpful intel about the enemy's intentions. It's fun AND useful. Recon will identify the General's approximate location--which changes every mission. You fly low in that area, identify the exact location, and take a photo of the General's party at lower than 100 meters. You'll get a commendation AND HQ will use your photo to determine the enemies intentions/primary objectives and let you know via on-screen messages. More info here (scroll down to "Find the General")

#9. Flying recon missions is essential to your mission AND fun. Someone on your side MUST fly recon to identify your primary and secondary objectives and their precise locations (details here, scroll down to "Recon Flights"). But flying recon even more often than that is helpful, too.
    • Some objectives move (as often as DAILY) and a new recon mission is needed to locate their new position.
    • A single recon mission never identifies ALL targets in an area.
    • Another recon mission will ALWAYS turn up more targets in an areas.
    • A recon mission is required to identify the General's position (see above)
    • Pilots who recon get a piece of every victory made using their recon photos. In other words, you'll get victory credits, promotions, ace credits, etc--just by flying RECON missions.

And did I mention--flying recon is FUN!!!! I've had some of the most intense missions of my CLOD career flying recon. You're flying at Angels 35, which is like walking a tightrope. You have to fly over exact locations to recon them, but you can't see very well from such altitude. You have to get back in one hour AND in one piece or your recon photos will be wasted.

And then . . . a pesky 109 starts stalking you from below. Can you escape with your precious photos? Sometimes you can . . . and sometimes not.

Re: TWC Campaign Server (English Channel) pilot tips . . .

Also, we try to make the servers self-documenting as best we can. So for example, use chat command

    Code:
    <help
You will see a lot of help info listed, and also instructions for getting some of the more specific help available. For example:

    Code:
<chelp - help on the cover aircraft system
<khelp - help on the Knickebein system
<ahelp - help with airborne intercept radar
    <rrhelp - help with rearm/reload
Also--just browse through the Tab-4 menu system and see what's available--and then TRY it. For the most part, you can't do any harm--you'll just see what it does or get an informational message.

Every item on the Tab-4 menus is there for a reason and regularly used by experienced/good pilots when doing one activity or another.

Also FYI in order to avoid cluttering up the chat window (and divulging your actions to the enemy) almost all chat commands can be accomplished via the Tab-4 menu system. For example

    • You can release your gunner position to AI by typing chat command <ai. But you can do the same thing via Tab-4-4-8.
    • You can release your cover aircraft by chat command <cland. Or via Tab-4-4-4-4-9 (must repeat it 2X--to avoid accidental release).
    • You can advance to the next Knickebein target point via <knext or via Tab-4-4-4-4-1

Re: TWC Campaign Server (English Channel) pilot tips . . .

    Another pilot tip:

#10. The online radar/General Situation Map & other info given you during a mission is often a mystery that you can solve . . . IF you're attentive & put 2+2 together.

Just for example, if you watch the the screen, you will often see low-level bomber formations, for example, phase in and out of radar. If you watch it for a while (or click on the aircraft icon to set a colored "air beacon" that allows you to track that airgroup over time) you'll see it's often something like a dotted line with some of the dots missing and some remaining.

Particularly, breather pilots with large cover formations often try to fly under the radar. But it takes a LOT of discipline to stay 100% under the radar over a long distance. Most often they will pop up a few times here or there, over the course of a long mission.

Point is, someone actually keeping watch over the General Situation Map would notice that type of thing - and plan accordingly. Someone just casually glancing at the General Situation Map or using Tab-4-1 radar doesn't have a chance of spotting it.

There is a lot more information on the General Situation Map that is designed to be like that--a clue that you can follow to unravel more.

Just for example, the recently added Bomber Sortie list (bottom of the General Situation Map) has many clues you can use to make your sorties more impactful.

Particularly--the "leaked" bomber sortie plans from the other side . . .

And . . . have you ever noticed enemy planes on the ground at their airfields? (The work of spies & recon, FYI--not radar per se.) A person could figure out a lot about enemy intentions just from that info.

Also, much of the info that comes on your chat screen in-game is along those lines. Little tidbits about what the enemy is doing, that you can add up to something more, if you're paying attention.

Re: TWC Campaign Server (English Channel) pilot tips . . .

Another little tidbit many pilots may not be aware of . . . in the Teams/Mission summary stats, whenever one side or the other completes their objectives and turns the map, the stats page provides a complete summary of everyone who contributed to the victory, by flying recon to identify objectives, or attacking/bombing objectives, OR flying support/cover for those bombers.

(Yes, the server keeps track of not only players who bombed or directly attacked an objective, but ALSO all other players in the area who are providing cover or assisting in the attack. Even if you don't score any direct kills or hits yourself, if you are in the area and assisting, you get a nice degree of credit towards your career/stats, and also acknowledgement in the listing summarizing the victory.)

The summary also has helpful info such as a complete log of the "NetStats" for all players for each session, a log of aircraft lost (and by whom) for that session, and so on.

You find this info via the Team Stats page which you can find via the "Team Stats Archive" link on the main server stats page.

Sample (from the 27 June 2021 Log):

BLUE session totals: 67.0 total Kill Points; 20.0/0.0/0.0/47.0 Air/AA/Naval/Ground Kill Points

Hey Flug, this is excellent information. What you guys have accomplished with this server is absolutely mind boggling. The TWC Servers are what brought me here, have kept me here, and will continue to keep me here for who knows how long

I'm not sure if you have much to do with the TWC Server Stats pages, but when I go to http://brenthugh.com/twc/radar/, the only stats pages listed there are: Tobruk Server Stats - Mission Server Stats - Tactical Server Stats - Older Stats Archive. There is no Team Stats page listed, in fact the only way I've been able to access the Team Stats page is by the link you provided in your message here. It would be great if we could access all the TWC Stats Pages from the TWC Server Stats page.

    Hi Flug,
Agree that this is great stuff. Due to work commitments and time zones, I'm often flying when there's not a lot of people online and I've been leaning towards reconnaissance trips lately. I find them interesting and it's great to see the stats. It gives a sense of satisfaction that those flights have actually had some impact in the campaign. The work put into this setup is much appreciated
    Cheers, Bubba

Padre, Flug is the Stats Man, only one of the many hats he wears......
On the stat page at the bottom of the "Team Totals for Current session" there is a link "TEAM stats archive"
Warning.....once you click and go in.....there is no guarantee you will get out......................
