Nothing against seaplanes but I would prefer TF to spent time making planes that would bring more people to the sim like FockeWulf MkIX maybe Typhoon or Mustang MkI
They could be cool but I do think that resources would be better spent on planes more crucial to the theatres, for instance the SM79 for the Med or the Hawk 75 and/or Fairey Battle for France scenarios.
We have considered the possibility of adding seaplanes, but the fact is, most people would not fly them.
They would be only used by a niche group.
If we do add them, there would also need to be seaplanes for both sides... it would be a non-starter to have only one side with the option to fly them.
From the existing AI aircraft, the larger seaplanes would be a very complex task... the Sunderland's cockpit and gunner stations are not far short of the B-17... and the Heinkel He-115 also has a very complex cockpit. For these reasons, they are unlikely.
A better choice would be the Walrus and the He-59... there is an He-59 external model in the game archives... it was never used in the original CLIFFS OF DOVER.
These aircraft would also be able to be used if we created an Air/Sea rescue system for downed pilots.
The He-59 would work for the Channel map, but AFAIK it never operated in the Mediterranean... the Italians provided the seaplane rescue there. And unfortunately the Italian Air/Sea rescue, the Cant Z-501 would be a very complex aircraft to model, comparable to the He-115.
The other alternative would be to forget about Air/Sea rescue, drop the He-59 and build the German Arado 196, which was a small seaplane which used both from shore bases as well as being catapult launched from German Cruisers and Battleships. The Walrus was also catapult launched from British Cruisers and Battleships, so there would be an equivalency.
But all these possibilities... for which we have given lots of thought, are faced with the reality that TF has very limited modeling resources, and the majority of the community when faced with a choice between an early FW-190A/Typhoon and a Walrus/He-59 would take the first two aircraft 90% of the time.
So yeah, of course we'd like to have flyable seaplanes... but unless we are flooded with a whole new group of experienced 3D modelers wanting to join TF, the chances are small.
Just to clarify...My poll was and is not meant to eventually request something to TFS in the future or anytime.
I was simply curious to know if there were/are other like me who would have liked to fly a seaplane in game. ( At least just flying a bit with the fantasy is still possible and permitted LOOL )
