As my instructor in Reserves used to say when I was training with the Sterling Submachinegun.... "3 round bursts for controlled fire and weapon integrity".
They don't use the Sterling anymore, but the same applies to any auto weapon other than one with a changeable barrel or one which is watercooled. Even then, sustained bursts are not recommended for long periods.
