They haven't finished the map yet.

And I've asked them to look at the runway again as it does look slightly too light.

Strange - from those angles it looks more like a car than a plane.
... which is exactly what I thought when someone posted pictures of their Mustang.

    Re: Spitfire Restoration

Saw this Spitty in 2018. Was having a real good look and this bloke comes up, and asks if I'd like a photo. Never one to miss an opportunity I said sure, then he gets in it! But hey I got to sit in the cockpit. I must have dirtied it given you have had to do a full strip and paint job shortly there after Seas

Looking good mate! When you putting it on the boat to the Colonies mate?

This is making me very nostalgic.

Had a 1973 Spit as student in the 1980s. Think it was “French blue” so pretty similar.

when the kids came along it was bike or car... so i rode the 7R and the spit went into the garage at my mums place...

Wow.... the amonut of times I was on the verge of selling her... and my wife said NO!!... you cannot sell the spitfire!!

    Seriously!

Through all the super hard times (and there were many). It was her who stopped me every time.

    awww!!!!

Almost sold her again to get a Lotus Elise. Right before i decided to say sod it... let's just go for a rebuild.

My eldest had her third driving lesson 2 days ago... and my youngest has decided the spit is her birth right

she is probably right to be fair...

But I'm a long way from done yet !!

    Yeah...

Its a driving experience that requires you to be alert. and frankly... able to drive !!!

I did Brighton to Edinburgh about 18 years ago... stopped off at Sheffield overnight.

It's along drive in one hit. Especially in a Spitfire.

I've also done Brighton to Penzance over night a few times... but Bodmin Moor... even with halogen headlight upgrades... man... !!

1970's wind screen wipers have zero chance to clear that kind of being inside a cloud!!!

will post shots when i get her back !

    In a Triumph Spitfire?

I can only presume the reward for arriving in West Cornwall with a concrete backside was a welcoming young lady......

Heck what a fantastic community, CLOD and Triumph Spitfires!
    Match made in heaven.

Used to stop once for fuel and comfort around Newark. No idea how I did it but was late teens, early twenty’s so had the stamina then. Remember one occasion when I really did start hallucinating and not sure how I made it.

Lovely job you have done there and so jealous you kept it.
My then girlfriend (now wife) didn’t manage to persuade me to keep it.
Nice MkIV with overdrive and bonnet was perfect.
My two lads would have loved tinkering with it.

@Laser , I got a Magenta hard top for mine that gave it a two tone look when fitted!

No digital cameras back then and not even sure where any old photos are. Will need to ask my better half.

    She had nice pasties.

It's as comfy as can be the spit. The stock seats are really good.... if you rebuild them once every 30-40 years.

I should.make a note of that as it goes or i will forget. Repair seats when 80-90.

    There.

Definitely wont forget to check this post when that time comes around.

    Re: Spitfire Restoration

    9 months....

Standard gestation period for a Standard Triumph

    Work to do:

still have the entire back end running gear to sort out... think the diff is still ok... some ticking on the right side rear... probably universal joint play... been clicking like that for the past 20 years.....

    Work thats done:

Pretty much a body tub off restoaraion....

have a 'new' 1500 engine in. It's a remanufactured Ivor Searle unit. original specs.

and this car has more poke than before. Not by a lot... but.... it has enough more to justify the new eninge instalation.

It's still nothing by todays standards... but holy moly... in 1978? in the uk?... HELL YEAH!!

This would have been epic ! It still is.. I drifted it round the Lewes roundabout... (erm.. running the engine in)

The handling on these is superb anyway... and with original spec BHP...

    oh yeah!

and I also realise now how much work i have to do with the interior....

I'm a spanners guy really.... but.... i can sew too....

    Nice car!
Do you have tune the engine? The original power is a bit poor, a few more hp are needed.

I've always been interested in buying a Spit.

That sounds more like a G50 restoration project...

Do you have tune the engine? The original power is a bit poor, a few more hp are needed.

I've always been interested in buying a Spit.

remove the poppet valves from the butterfly valves, gets you abour 25% more iar flow and makes her pop on the overun. Put a stubular manifold on and a stright through sports exhasut, you now need to swap the needle in eth carbs over (i forget which ones but could look it up)

Advance the ignition timing by about 10 degrees.

Shes good for a 100mph. cruise at 80 is relaxed (with overdrive engaged).

The 1500 lump is no screamer... sedate road engine with a fair bit oif torque but not a load of biting top end.

Good road engine. Would be rubbish on teh track... the 1300 is a way better option for that.

I know somone who is putting an MX5 engine (and transission) in one.

    That will be a flyer.

Mine is probably one of the quicker 1500's... but you are right. These are not powerful sports cars.

hell of a lot of fun though!
