Any idea what this is?

Mother compass
The mother compass was permanently installed in the fuselage of the aircraft, usually behind the pilot's seat. It consisted of a liquid-damped magnetic compass (or gyrocompass) that was suspended and largely vibration-free. The non-magnetic housing of the compass was made of bakelite. It was possible to attach small magnets to this housing to compensate the compass. This was done on so-called compensating discs.
The compass reading was tapped electrically and transferred to the daughter compass in the dashboard. A mother compass could have any number of daughter compasses, such as on large watercraft or large aircraft.
