TrueSky Cloud Types - First Look!

    Hi All,

Much work from the team is going into the implementation of various cloud types into the Cliffs of Dover Blitz/Desert Wings Tobruk TrueSky weather engine.

Eight cloud types, along with vary cloud levels, will bring different experiences and challenges to players.

    The varying types will be:

    Altostratus
    Cirrocumulus
    Cirrus
    Cumulonimbus
    Cumulus
    Nimbostratus
    Stratocumulus and
    Stratos

We hope you enjoy this first look at these cloud types, which will be featured further in an upcoming video.

    Regards,

    TFS Team

Your WiP-Video and the new screenshots are looking very promising. But one big question remains: Have these new clouds a tactical relevance or are they only eye candy? Which means can I hide my plane in the clouds against an attacking player? The video gave no answer as it seems the planes were not obscured in the clouds but it is only WiP so I hope for the best. Keep up your great effort. S!

Hi Pat.......really encouraging to see all this very promising work going on. I hope the chaps at TFS do manage to squeeze a summer holiday in some time.

Jen and I have just yesterday returned from walking the 80 miles of the Swale Way, crossing the Pennines from Boroughbridge to Kirby Stephen. This was a bit of England you and Kim did not get to see but is beautiful. Next time, maybe?

However, we did see a lot of sky and in particular, lots of examples of the clouds shown in pics 6 and 8! Good work!

Looking really nice, especially the stratus types!

The only one I'm not too keen on is the Cirrus one - it doesn't look that realistic. However the Cirrus in the current CLoD is highly realistic so why not go with that?

Many thanks again Team Fusion, great job!

Because the current ones are 2d. Once we were able to go past their altitude (TFS changed the engine so it became possible) it became awfully clear they are 2d. It feels like flying out of the sky box.
Buzzsaw answered this when someone asked about it iirc. On the official forums if I’m not mistaken.

    Hi.

The clouds will be the same on all player's PC in online flight, so YES, the clouds have real tactical value.
It also masking the view bubble of AI, so you can hide from AI too.

Please note, trueSKY is not restricted these number of cloud types... it is possible to create more.

    These are the default types.

Another question comes to mind. What happens when you fly through a Cumulonimbus cloud in TrueSky. These clouds in real life have a dangerous Up/Down draft, they are something to avoid.

    Thanks.

Re cirrus clouds, what I mean is the current cirrus clouds look really good, and so why not "hard-code" them in 2D (i.e, make them part of the blue sky backdrop) at an altitude too high for any aircraft to reach. This is just so that if weather type is set to 'clear' the blue sky looks authentic (there is usually cirrus-type ice-cloud present during fine, anti-cyclonic weather.) Just looks better than wall-to-wall blue.

Then Truesky can provide all the different 3D cloud types below 35,000 feet or so, with of course all the marvellous tactical possibilities which can result.

That's what the original developers did... they set the clouds at approx. 30,000 ft, and it was inaccurate.

The Spitfire Mk IIA could reach 37,000 ft. The Bf-109E-4N could reach 38,000.

Later aircraft keep going higher and higher... by the end of the war, aircraft were close to 50,000 ft.

And cirrus did not occur only at 50,000 ft... it occurred much lower... at varying heights.

We will do it right... do the clouds in 3D and make them capable of being set at varying heights.
