Just wanted to introduce myself to the forum. I'm Useless and I've been playing flight sims since MS Flight Simulator 95. I finally bit the bullet and bought the IL-2 series and am having a blast so far. Thanks for keeping a great community!

Welcome to the forum.
I hope you will continue enjoying the game.

Welcome!
At this point I will call you Summer as I don't know you yet to know if you are Useless
Hi U/S....and Arthur.......welcome to our ATAG Forum and servers. Great news that you have found us. Hopefully, you will learn to love the sim and stick around forever. We know that Cliffs is quite a difficult sim to learn so if you have any questions or need a little advice or help on any aspect, post about it on this Forum and answers will flood your way.
Alternatively, I will keep an eye out for you on the Axis v Allies and other servers and if I see you don't be surprised if I try to say 'hello.' We use either use Team Speak or Discord to chat and cooperate (i.e crack jokes!) during sorties. It's all great fun and we hope you will feel able to join us in the near future.
Good luck with your training and hope to 'wing up' with you some day! Salute!
Welcome to Cliffs/Tobruk gents.
Hopefully will get to me you in the Skies.
As Marlow mentioned, sing out of you need any help. You are bound to get it her.
Cheers,
Pattle

Welcome Mr. UselessSummer!
Talking about uselessness I might be a wing-man for you sometimes. My specialty is to get problems with key bounds and commands thereof. For example, I flew two times this morning using the good trusty Junkers Ju 88. I took off from Creil and headed to the southern part of the Channel Map. The first flight ended in 35 minutes as a gentleman named “Padre” shot me down with his Hurricane. The second flight lasted for 51 minutes before another man shot me down with a Beaufighter.
The issue here is that I do not bother using the machine guns I have onboard, since sometimes the commands work and sometimes not. I understand that if I concentrated carefully on the subject, I might get all the gadgets work well, but I feel like it takes too much time. And that´s why I let AI use the machine guns to defend me. As far as I have seen it has turned out to be unsuccessful so far. AI just cannot defend me… so it is in a way – useless, too!
Not everybody have these problems. I think that these problems arise when I change the aeroplane and especially from blue side to the red or vice versa.
I noticed that Mr. Marlow already wrote that “Cliffs is quite a difficult sim to learn”. Yes, it is and by the same token I confirm that it is worth to study and learn! He also advised you to ask if you need any help. The answers will flood your way – but don´t ask me, as I could only offer you more questions… That´s all about uselessness for now, I think.
Hope to see you soon airborne!
Kindly,
Walstein

Hey Walstein
Yes, it is a steep learning curve to get started in this game.
Regarding getting shot down... against a Hurricane you might have a decent chance. (that is, a Hurricane armed with light machine guns... cannon armed variants are nasty) Against a Beaufighter, you are in deep sh*t... they are bomber killing machines... best to get an escort to protect you.
Regarding using the gunner positions... really not that hard if you take the time to set them up, especially the German bombers... mouse control on the guns is best.
I would recommend you post on the forums and see if one of the resident bomber specialists would be willing to help out.
Hey Walstein, it was a good bit of fun, the Beaufighter pilot was my pal TWC_Fylmaboots, although I simply call him Phil. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the TWC server, but most aircraft can call in cover aircraft. There's a whole section on the ATAG forum explaining how to do this. I'll try to find the link and add it to my message unless someone beats me to it, but the bigger idea I want to pass along is this: when you call in cover aircraft, not only do they help you complete your mission, it makes it difficult for your opponent to determine which aircraft is AI and which is the breather. Many times I've flown a bomber mission and get pounced by some 109's or 110's, but as luck would have it, they went after my AI cover aircraft and left me alone. And with all the fire power the cover aircraft was able to put out, either shot them down or damaged them enough that they headed for home and allowed me to continue the mission. Going on a bombing mission without cover is a suicide mission, especially if there are breather pilots on.
But thanks for the fun
As promised, here is the link to the TWC message that explains many of the TWC Server dynamics.

It's a bit of a read, but well worth it, and once you have a working knowledge of the different functions, a whole new world will open up for on our server. How Flug and Fatal have managed this is well beyond my scope of abilities, but I'm truly appreciative of their efforts, that allows me to be constantly involved in the action of the missions, regardless of whether there are breather pilots on or not.
