Sad...............
Strange flight path
Very Sad and a very strange collision.
Very sad event.
My heart goes out to the pilots and crewmembers wives and children.
All these guys are extremely dedicated and hardworking... many are ex-military because to fly these aircraft requires a very high level of skill.
I have dealt with many vintage warbird pilots and they are all generous and open to a fault... always willing to talk about the aircraft and their experiences flying them.
Not only do these types of collisions cost lives, they also destroy irreplaceable aircraft types. And they increase the pressure to ground all vintage types... which would be a loss to all those who love them.
May their souls rest in eternal peace.
They died doing what they loved most.
They now went flying in higher skies.

Why on earth they even allow these planes to fly close to each other is beyond me.
It seems that the P63 was told via radio to overtake the B17:

What struck me most was how quickly the B-17 disintegrated. We have all seen amazing images from WW2 of B-17's coming home effectively held together by the smallest of restraints but this aircraft hit the B-17 (it looks like directly behind the port side wing spa) and the tail sheared straight off.
This incident will no doubt lead to calls for vintage aircraft not to be allowed to fly, which would obviously be a tragedy, but with the greatest respect to loss of life here, will there be a point when preservation of these historic aircraft has to be taken as a priority over concerns of further losses (to life and property)?

this accident had nothing to do with technical condition of these planes so I don't see a reason to ground anything. On the other hand I would expect some more regulations about plane separation and flight organization during airshows.
That was a hard piece of film to watch. Those poor souls, I always appreciated their dedication to keeping the WWII era aviation alive, God bless them <S>
it is a great misfortune
