Evacuations in Heidelberg because of a WWII bomb

    Today this baby

was removed from a construction site in Heidelberg. Several thousands of people had to be temporarily evacuated.
    Alledgedly a 250 kg bomb.

I actually wonder how it got there.
Heidelberg was never heavily bombed, in contrast to nearby industrial cities and the place where it was found was just fields without any settlement until recently.
Maybe the train station was the target, but then it went really wide.

It could have been jettisoned from a damaged aircraft trying to get home and needing to lighten the load

Bombs were dropped everywhere in our area, damaged or defunct bombers also dropped bombs over my home village.

i live 20km SW from Mannheim and 17km SSW from Heidelberg.
in our Forest we still see bomb craters today.

there are mysterious reports that Heidelberg was spared from bombs,
there are even said to have been leaflets announcing that Heidelberg would be spared,
    but this was never confirmed

DerDa you live in Heidelberg you have any information about this, i longer look for

I only know the usual rumours, that the Americans decided early on that they wanted the lovely place as a future headquarter.
There was very little of military interest there anyway. No real important industry, nor any really important transport routes.
Even the railway bridge was/is about 10km further down the river and this was not important enough to be a target. The Germans blew it up in spring '45 and the Americans had it provisionally repaired a week later.
