Yo-Yo has just uploaded The Hardest Day - Mini campaign!

I don't think it will upload here so here is a dropbox link:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/zijkr41eiw...y_v3.1.7z?dl=0

I'm practicing mission building and have put 6 missions together based on the 18th August 1940 ('The Hardest Day') that form a mini campaign of sorts.

    1) These are not truely historical, but I have tried my best with regards to squadrons, flight paths, targets etc. Sources were all on the the web, and so yes, that includes alot of Wiki. Sorry about that. Fuel and weapons are probably all over the place too, the Heinkells can probably fly to the moon and back, but well, that's something I'll look at for another project.
    2) I've spammed loads of aircraft, its a bit like leaving me with an open biscuit packet, there's just no stopping. It seems to work ok on my 'definitely not cutting edge' pc, I got a tiny bit of stutter in testing but only over dense urban areas, and I think that is regardless of my aircraft spam and was definitely not enough to spoil my fun (I do have low standards though).
    3) The aircraft spam is for a reason. Firstly it is to try and represent the actual events and volume of aircraft, but also to ensure the missions and environment have things going on over time and away from your intended path to hopefully allow you to still find something interesting even if you fly off the intended waypoints a bit.
    4) This is all for fun. The intention is to take up a Hurricane or Spitfire depending on the mission and just shoot things in a busy environment. The balance of the sides may be off, but my aim is really to have visuals and of course things to tangle with.
    5) There is a bit of simple scripting that requires you to land or at least bail to progress to the next mission. This is just because whilst it is about fun for me, I think it is important to value your virtual life and fear your vitrual death to an extent, so to,... well,... be dissapointed at least with death.
    6) Whilst there is this 'progression' you are not flying the same pilot or squadron, the 6 missions jump about the south of England. A sample of many dips you could say, rather than just hogging the same bowl of hummus.
    7) Apologies again, it's all English language.

There is a readme with install instructions for those who don't know how to add a custom campaign. And please do scan for viruses (I have before zipping and uploading but there's no harm being careful)

If you find anything totally broken then let me know, but remember this is not meant to be perfection, just fun.

Edit 26/05/23 : Link is now for version 3.1, this should fix the issues I had with the mission/kill count that seemed to come in after the last game update (I rewrote the code using a difffernt C# thing).

    Regards,

    Yo-Yo

    Hi Yo-Yo,

I've followed instructions but campaign doesn't appear in the list.
    Anyone has more chance ?

    Thanks

Re: Yo-Yo has just uploaded The Hardest Day - Mini campaign!

    1) You've put the mission folder called 'The_Hardest_Day' and then the 'The_Hardest_day.ini' file in the custom folder in your documents path here?

    C:\Users\your_name\Documents\1C SoftClub\il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover\mission\campaign\custom

    2) Then modify your campaigns.ini in this folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\IL-2 Sturmovik Cliffs of Dover Blitz\parts\tobruk\mission\campaign

    by adding:

    [The_Hardest_Day]
    folder The_Hardest_Day
    title The Hardest Day
    image Hardestposter_1.bmp

    at the bottom?

And do you have Tobruk as I think by default my missions reference parts of that, probably possible to strip out, but I figured most people if they have CLod and actively use it they will have got Tobruk.

And sorry if I state the obvious but it will appear aphabetically, so will be next to The Blue Wellingtons campaign in the list, not at the end.

    Look at me!
    I'm the incarnation of stupidity...

I've copied files in an old folder (alias to Documents\1C SoftClub on D drive) never used anymore.

Once files copied in correct folder, your campaign is available.

    Thanks for your help.

I'm at work now (well, not really, I'm in home-working) so I can't play your mission at this time but I'll try it this evening (2D and VR).

I've just put a new version on the dropbox which thanks to GANIX now uses landing, or successsful bailing as the progression requirement. (If you die bailing out it is a failure now).

Good that its ok now, I hope you enjoy it.

I just flew the first mission myself to test the new progression script and decided to tangle with the escort instead of tickling the bombers, it was fun. (Even if I do blow my own trumpet by saying so). I really do need to set up my Hurricane ammunition belts to have more of a kick though.

Ho yeah. It would be great if we could define the composition of our ammunition bands and the convergence too.

There's a new version on the dropbox, just hopefully fixes the line of text for mission success that wasn't showing after mission 1, and also corrects a typo in mission 4.

    I appreciate the feedback.

Downloaded and will install. Great that you are adding new content! How many aircraft do you have in the air at once? Asking to see whether it is VR friendly (more taxing on resources) or 2D monitor focused. In any event, I'll share my impressions (once I have them).

Ah, yes I am only on 2d monitor sorry.

It depends if you mean in the air near you (visible) or, active in the game as a whole. A quick check and it looks like I tend to have 60 -90 aircraft in the whole mission at once (only one mission uses a delayed trigger for one flight), but, most of the missions have this 60-90 split between at least two distinct locations. So in any one position you would probably have 40 - 60 aircraft at a hotspot.

(My key aim in this was to have that 'wall of bombers approaching' feel (that CloD does so well), then go pew pew them. So I put them in multiple groups of 9 or 12 etc)

No apology re 2D, most people remain solidly 2D. But it would be ideal if it works well for both 2D and VR. I'll fly in VR and share my thoughts/experience as soon as I can. Given the age of the game, most campaigns/missions were developed at a time when PC's had a fraction of the horsepower we do today. Now you can build missions/campaigns that can be a lot more realistic. So I like what you are aiming for. Also old campaigns do not take advantage of the new tech and improvements that Team Fusion have made and are making. Many campaigns lack scripting which is something that can really enhance a campaign (randomness, scoring, branching missions, etc.).

I've also read your tutorials. Thanks for doing that too.

Have done minor cosmetic changes to the date format of the campaign breifing and the poster on the campaign list - both should now be in the same format as the missions that come with the game.

    Yo-Yo:

I think I've downloaded the latest update where you note that you've found the historical weather and updated for it. I presume you found this:

    https://digital.nmla.metoffice.gov.u...-185ae9352a3f/

Unfortunately the release version of the game does not have the TrueSky implementation in it and your weatherindex is limited to 0=Blue Sky, 1=Cumulus and 2=overcast. I see that you've chosen 2=overcast. I have to admit that for me it makes your missions a challenge in that most of the mission travel is in thick cloud basically on instruments, constantly checking my position on the map. Then suddenly the bombers come out of the clouds but I end up attacking in thick overcast again. Not fun for me. Sorry to say.

TrueSky will give you many new cloud types to implement. I've looked at the weather at Croydon for August 16 at 1pm and it was more like 6/10ths altocumulus at 1200m (3500'). I've created a spreadsheet that converts the Air Ministry weather report into CLoD cloud types and windspeed and wind direction. Once everyone is on 5.5 I intend to share the spreadsheet. I'm converting as many existing campaign missions as possible to TrueSky before release of the 5.5 update. Truesky can create its own issues so every mission has to be flight tested to qualitatively get the look and feel right. It's laborious but rewarding, because I think, like you, getting the weather more realistic immerses the player into more of a "you are there" environment.

I'm attaching a spectacular picture captured by one of the Team Fusion team members (posted on Twitter a few days ago... please follow Team Fusion). While this is not exactly the altocumulus of August 16t6, 1940, you can see that the sky is far more complex and quite different than the simple overcast using WeatherIndex=2. For now, I would kick it back to 1 to make the missions more playable.

I really like following your work. You are way ahead of me and I'm enjoying seeing where you go. If you want to see more, a simple search of the forum with TrueSky will reward you.

I will set it to 1 or 0 then (for clear days), I thought 2 was just medium (as per the editor), not overcast, I don't recall seeing it paticularly cloudy in the normal game ever. And yes all the weather sources I was viewing was way more complex than beign able to shoehorn it into 0, 1 or 2. I just wanted to not have 100% clear skies when it was over 5/10 cloud.

I've updated the version on the download to have 1 for weather index where it was 2. (One mission is 0).

    Yo-Yo:
You'll be really happy once the Truesky version will be released. I'm going to ask the VR beta-testers to install your campaign. With weather more game friendly, they can give feedback on missions, but just as importantly VR performance under higher loads.

Re: Yo-Yo has just uploaded The Hardest Day - Mini campaign!

OK, this is a bit experimental but seems to work.

Edit 26/05/23 - Original link now has this in it.

This is not what the main link points to currently as I am still testing if it works properly (I've called it version 2 for now though). It is a campagin progression that tracks your air victories and shows this on the success and a second slide on the second mission briefing intro screen (the one where you actually start the mission from).

The only real hassle is that if you start a new campagin midway through one, you'll need to manually delete a file called killstats.csv file that gets created in the campaign folder.

And of course there's a chance it might not work at all, I had a real problem getting the base mission folder thing working for a campaign, but it does now for me.

I've made the code so its hopefully easy to slot into any campaign where the mission and briefings are just 01, 02 etc. i.e. another I am working on as well as the stock ones in game already. There's jsut a variable that needs changing on each .cs file to reflect the number of missions in a campaign, and, you need to make sure your [MISSION] briefing exists and has the second slide with some holding text initially, and some hodling text in the [2] section success caption.

If anyone tries this version please let me know how you get on.

I just used onActorDead for counting kills, so it might be missing some that happen (one's that ditch in water for example), but hey, you don't always get what you claim! For a lot of code and time spent it doesn't actually show that much (see screenshot), but a crucial bit of ego info when flying a fighter and it was a learning objective I set myself.

    Yo-Yo:

I'll download and try this. Keeping persistent stats is a really good concept, so nice to see you working on implementing.

I've been testing the weather for TrueSky for the VR beta side using actual weather reports from the British Air Ministry. Got things working nicely. One thing I do is run missions Autopilot only and see what happens. In mission #1 I noticed that the Autopilot gets you to waypoint #5 and then just circles and circles. You might want to look at that. All other missions RTB'd just fine.

On the other hand, on Mission #4 the Spitfire was gears down and about to land when he got bounced by a couple of Me-109's. I watched him throttle up, gear up and re-engage the enemy. Then when the Me-109's were driven off, the autopilot went back into the pattern. Never seen that before from the AI. Way cool.

I looked at your missions in the FMB. You really have done a lot of research!

Thanks, yes I run the missions on autopilot to test first, but must have missed that one (or most likely accidentally deleted the return waypoints at some point amongst the waypoint spaghetti.), I'll add them in. Some people may just want to timeskip to scramble action too so I build everything to fit to timings on autopilot, then check if I can fly it 'properly' and still see the flights I roughly expect too.

There's a definite mission building buzz when you fly somethign manually for the first time and see some pretty cool interactions just naturally happening, especially when you didn't put too much personal 'choice' in, but rather tried to represent what little info you have.

I did do a whole load of research, but kind of think maybe it worked out easier putting those hours in rather than trying to 'make up' things and then get them to fit together.

Both drop box links (original and v2 above) should now have corrected waypoints for that first mission. Thanks for flagging it.

On my new campaign that I'm working on I'm looking to add in a bit of random activity, for example just an extra flight of 109s that may or may not spawn, and may be a sweep before a raid, or come in a couple of minutes after things are in a melee. The hope being that especially if replaying you can't let your guard down thinking, 'job done I've got this escort in front of my guns', or, switch off when climbing to intercept...

I think there is a bug in my code, I added a new line when it writes the csv but I don't think it is needed. I'll fix it and update when I can.

Have uploaded a new version of version2 that I think fixes it but will test myself.

(apologies for the garbage version definitions)

Edit: Yes, seems to be fixed

Edit 2: Hmm, but is an issue on the 6th mission. Will investigate.

Edit 3: Found the last mission issue, done a quick fix and uploaded. Will do a proper fix later.

Re: Yo-Yo has just uploaded The Hardest Day - Mini campaign!

OK, so I think I have the kills and sortie counts working properly, I found a couple of other bugs that I think I've fixed. Drop box link shoudl connect to the updated files.

I also think I have got it now so that if you restart the campaign midway through it will realise this and delete and recreate the killstats file so you start form zero on sorties and kills (no need to manully delete the file in this scenario).
