    Full fuel?

Does anyone know if historically during the BoB whether the RAF (and associated serivces/squadrons) would always send the fighters up with a full fuel load? Or would it ever be intentionally limited?

Considering a Spitfire carried around 1 1/2 hours fuel it'd be a major handicap to send it up with less.

Of course in an emergency scramble it could go up with whatever it had.

'We'll go with what we've got' I can hear Christopher Plummer shouting in the BoB film as the Hurricanes retreat in France.

One and a half hours of fuel with an intact tank. Significantly less if Jerry puts a hole or three in it.

    Re: Full fuel?

    It depends on the aircraft.
Spit, Hurri and Me 109 had a very bad range anyway, so I suppose they had full tanks whenever they could.
The Dewoitine D.520 on the the hand had huge tanks for overland flights that were never filled for combat missions.

With twin engine fighters and ground attakers I don't know. 110s and Beaufighters were often used for long distance missions, still I'm not sure they were filled to the brim if the target was known to be closer.
