Hawker Typhoon Project Underway in British Columbia, Canada

Read this interesting article about a project to rebuild and make flight worthy a Hawker Typhoon.

Rejoined forum after years away. The first post I clicked on was about the Hawker Typhoon. Being a Vancouver Island resident I had no idea this project was in the works. Thanks for the posting, enjoyed the topic. I'm 76 years old living in Chemainus, BC. Would be a great trip to take and visit. Give my Miata a needed tour.

I know the group which is building this... they have also done work on Spitfires. (as you can see in the story, they know their way around Merlins)

I think if anyone can do this, they can.

But it is a huge challenge to get a Napier Sabre up and running properly.

They were notoriously fickle engines which took quite a while to get reliable enough for combat.

And with not all the details and no factory to back them up, having to manufacture all the parts from scratch via reverse engineering, it will be extremely difficult.

One error, and the engine seizes and is junk again... requiring a complete new start.

There is a similar project underway in the UK, at a more advanced stage I believe.

Typhoon RB396 is being rebuilt to airworthy, and has had work done to rebuild the rear fuselage, undertaken by Airframe Assemblies.
Their Sabre was donated to them by Cranfield University. I believe both teams are in contact and sharing information - I've been following progress on their facebook page.
