Pernix has created an explosive (literally!) event for us that is hurtling us to the baking hot sands south of Tobruk. Keep an eye on this space as Marlow crafts his always-colourful introduction to these proceedings. Full briefings will follow for both Blue and Red so squads and individual players can plan their strategies.

I can guarantee there is something for everyone as Axis and Allied forces collide in, to quote Pernix, "ensuring an appointment in history".

In a nutshell: a British Army convoy, lead by General Hawell, is headed to the Bir-Emba area to lay waste and destruction to any and all Axis airfields and field emplacements. This they will accomplishment unless stopped by Blue Regia Aeronautica forces (aided by Luftwaffe assets). It is up to Allied air strength to 1) protect the convoy's progress at all costs, and 2) destroy the Regia Aeronatica/Luftwaffe forces in the air and on the ground.

During all wars, succeeding in killing the commander of the attacking enemy was one of the objectives of the commands of the fighting armies.
Even in World War II, there was a fair amount of attention, military espionage, to report the moves of the commanders of the opposing faction.


This mission, which has no real historical references, is based on the attempt of the Italian army to eliminate the English high command, present on the field at the beginning of the counter-offensive, which would later be called "Compass", and which with an extraordinary advance brought the allied army as far as Agedabia, reconquering all of Cyrenaica.


While the grand coup at Bir-Hemba was being prepared, the two air forces challenged each other in the skies, and the Italian one, still without having suffered very serious losses, and able to fight, could afford to carry out long flights over the desert, to bomb the front enemy.
In this mission, his assault planes will have to arrive on time at the English camp, to eliminate General Hawell's convoy and ensure an appointment with history.

Pilots, your job is to support the offensive taking place in the Bir Emba area by destroying the enemy camps of Tummar West (L22.7) (315 Khz) and Nibeiwa (K20.9) (336 Khz).
From the nearby advanced field, a convoy of trucks will leave, with General Hawell, commander in chief of the army. Keep an eye out for our British convoy, to prevent the Italians from attacking it.


Pilots: The action is simple and straightforward...attack anything that moves on the ground as long as it's an enemy.

The SISMI Information Service announced that a convoy carrying the commander of the troops who are leading the offensive in the Bir-Emba area will leave near Bir el Malla South airport (O17.1) today in the morning. Your task, taking off from Sawani el Qasn , will be to destroy the convoy, killing the commander, General Hawell.


Sergeant ... as usual your plane is undergoing maintenance at the 2nd S.R.A.M. (J19.1) in the Bir-Emba area but ... it has been repaired, and is ready for combat.


Take off immediately, from this makeshift runway, without breaking the plane.
Climb 2000m above the nearest smoke and join the bomber formations that will carry out the action of containment of the offensive, but if you can too destroy that damn convoy ........ DO IT!!!

I remember we had a training mission, when this was about to be implemented (and it worked beautifully), but that's about how much I remember about it.
Is this mission or something similar still available so people can find out how this works before the event starts?
I know, I know, preparing yourself, knowing what you are doing and practising even does not sound FG28 at all, but I'm asking for a friend.

Sure, no problem!

You first must assign two keys to adjust the Primary Radio Frequency up and down. I just tested the radio compass in the Br.20M/Trop and it works beautifully. Same for the Wellies and the Beaufighters. I tried the Bf110 C-4/B Trop and there is no Primary Radio Frequency adjustment. There is a Secondary Radio Frequency adjustment in the 110 (for Lorenz Landing Beacons) which shows proximity to the target, but is non-directional, unlike the Br.20, Welly, and Beaufighter.

The idea is that escorting fighters need only to follow their bombers to the target area (which can be tricky to find over the trackless desert using compass and stopwatch alone).

Here is the briefing:

Just a quick training mission on using the Fixed Loop Radio Compass. The objective is to fly a triangular course to Oye Plages airfield, St Omer-Arques airfield, Wissant airfield, then back to Oye Plages airfield. Each airfield has a Long Range Radio Beacon with its own specific radio frequency:


Oye Plages: 302 Khz
St. Omer-Arques: 315 Khz
Wissant: 328 Khz


Simply adjust the Primary Frequency of your radio compass to the respective airfield frequencies, then adjust your flight direction to keep the gauge indicator centered. As you pass over your target airfield, adjust the radio compass frequency for the next target airfield, then steer your aircraft until the gauge indicator is centered once again.

I had two great sorties yesterday. First, I had to crash-land in the middle of the desert after being chased by spitfires. Luckily another 109 saved me. Later, I was involved in defending our home airfield. Thanks for organizing the event

Pinguim has got it 'bang on the money!' The convoy was the first priority but a lot of us...me included.....got carried away with flying Beaus' and hitting other targets. We wanted to get to grips with the radio navigation system built into the Beaus and Wellies and I think we also thought that we'd be able to knock out a target or two, before returning to defend the convoy with Spitfires. However, the convoy was obviously extremely easy to find and was destroyed in the first fifteen minutes!

So we Reds thought: 'Ok! That was unlucky but we'll make them pay when they defend all the other targets,'........and carried on regardless!

Unfortunately, although we hit all the other targets with Beau's (which proved highly effective ground attack aircraft) and later with Wellingtons, we received no score for our hits, nor any percentage, so our success really counted for nothing. ....but the radio navigation system proved really useful for finding targets in the featureless desert wastes!

So, it really would be great to have another crack at this map and, with that in mind, we're hoping that scoring and 'percentage destroyed' messages might be 'inserted' into the map by the Boffins (ably abetted by BlacKnight ) so the mission can be extended.

I personally 'had a ball' flying the Beau' last night. The firepower of those cannon is simply withering! Apologies to the poor CR 42 that simply 'disappeared' (in a shower of wood and chianti! Ha ha!) after a single blast, over the most western Blue airfield. I wonder who that was? Miraculously, I suffered no deaths despite flying Beaus and Wellies all evening...with one very late Spitfire flight. Which only goes to show...... just occasionally...and with the luck of the devil....you can defy the odds!

Excellent evening and immense fun had by all.

Not flown the Beau much and the extra firepower was welcome. Didn't even realise observer reloaded and thought i was out of ammo!

Nice to be back in Tobruk map and the sand certainly made a comparison to the green and blue channel.
Draw distance made it difficult to spot targets from high up. Think we had a bit of red on red at one point so we must apologise to our ground troops (if any survived to tell the tale).

Once we found the blue airfield it was a real bunfight.
Much chaos ensued and plenty of red and blue causalities

Had to bail a little early (both physically and metaphorically) so unfortunately missed any later Welli missions.

Many thanks to Pernix for the map and Snapper for the radio beacons. Very helpful and a boon to Wimpy squad. Who knows, I might actually find the target.
Now if only those boffins could move the ruddy gauge!

This Tobruk map is really good but difficult to navigate, I would suggest that it could be improved with a few features (fictional if necessary) railway lines, a couple of Oasis , roads and towns all visible from a good distance to provide some points of reference,

My sincere apologies for not having participated in yesterday's event and for being a little absent lately... A lot of work and vacations in a small isolated farm in the depths of France kept me away from the front line.
But I'm back soon and the first mission of the alterdag is ready... all that remains is to have it validated by my direct hierarchy, Sir Atag Snapper, and to decide if we will play it during the summer period or at the start of the school year...
I try to create a campaign that is as close as possible to the events of August 13,14,15, 1940.

RAF pilots will have to be ready to takeoff 24 hours a day.
Can't wait to fly back into our little community, hunt or be hunted, keep an eye on my wingman and bring everyone home.

After a very long break due to ill health, Covid then a PC breakdown I returned to Clod this year. Been stooging around since flying single ops trying to get the feel of flying again. Flew my first op on this sortie on Saturday night in a Hurricane then a Welly.
Great to see so many up in the air. I ended up pranging the Welly on return to base after seeing no action. Back to the HCU for more practice me thinks.

it was with OBT~ Mikmak and me that you circled above the desert until the end of the game. For me, a young pilot, it was a very good experience to practice this defensive flight which could at times become offensive and dangerous for you. you were very careful in every engagement. compliments!

it was you also that I engaged I think a few minutes before, remaining for more than a minute in your six hours without putting a single cartridge in your spitfire. I'm going back to hunting school and I hope to see you again soon...... in my viewfinder.
