Adlertag Event #1 - Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 1900 GMT on the ATAG Server

    Hey everyone,

Our good friend Polak and his ~OBT Squad have created a series of Channel online events recreating the Adlertag operation launched by the Luftwaffe on August 13, 1940 at the height of the Battle of Britain.

This event will be accessible to both Blitz-only and Blitz + Tobruk Cliffs of Dover players, so feel free to invite your friends and fellow squad members to join in the fun. All welcome - both squads and individual players.

Stay tuned at this thread location for further information - briefings, planesets, and more!!!

    OPERATION ADLERTAG
    October 7th, 2023
    19.00 GMT
    Server: Axis v Allies

RAF Manston, August 13th, 1940 - The Kitchens, Officer's Mess

'One thousand, two hundred and thirty one.......one thousand, two hundred and thirty two......' Pilot Officer 'Hegs' Heggers was counting potatoes. He was counting potatoes......
'One thousand, two hundred and thirty three,'........because once again he had 'upset' the Station Commander and was in jankers. Again!
'One thousand, two hundred and th.....'Hegs stopped mid peel as the small window of the station kitchen flew open and Jack Max's cheery face pushed through.

'Hey, Heggers? Now, what's the craic? What the hell have you done this time to be a-peelin spuds again? Would it be that Big Hilda.....or that new WAAF with the big...radar dishes?'

'For God's sake, Jack!' spluttered Hegs, angrily, ' I've lost count now! Oh, if you must know it was 'Midget Moira' from Stores!'

'Midget 'mighty' Moira? Ha ha! You'll be punching above yer weight there, man!' grinned Jack.' It's Little Jack's opinion, so it is, that you need to....... keep it in yer trousers!'

'Who the hell is 'Little Jack?' enquired Hegs, throwing another spud in the bucket.

'He's right on my shoulder, so he is,' grinned Jack. Can yer not see him?' By way of reply, Hegs threw the largest spud he could find at Jack's enfuriating face, which promptly took evasive action, banking neatly to the left.... and out of sight.

It was then that Hegs saw it...through the open window...a single Ju 88....careering over the perimetre of the airfield, towards the hangars, blast pens and admin buildings.

'Noofy!' wailed Hegs. 'And always just as we're about to have lunch!' Suddenly, the banshee was wailing outside and Jack burst in at the doorway...

'Ah, g'way outta that! Let's be havin' yer, Hegs! They'll need every pilot they can get!' he bellowed.

The two pilots rushed outside into a scene of carnage....of hell. One hangar was already a mass of flames. A group of WAAF's stood around on the tarmac, in a state of confusion. One lovely blonde (who Jack had tried to pick up last night..... and failed) was trying to light a cigarette with shaking hands.
'Put that cigarette out!' screamed a passing Warrant Officer. The pretty blonde ignored Jack (again!) and Hegs as they ran past and ssummoning all her courage shouted,

'Don't you shout at me, Mr Warwick!'

By this time Jack and Hegs had reached the line of parked Spitfire 1a's, fuelled and ready to go. Heg's hesitated...after all he was in 'jankers' but then it was all Midget Moira's fault. He'd tried to hold off...but she had insisted he undo .......

'Well don't just stand there......get one up!' shouted Squadron Leader 'Snap' Snapper, as he raced away towards a Spitfire, whose groundcrew had already started up the engine.

Heg's waited no longer! Sod the spuds! They would keep...along with Midget Moira!
This was going to be........ His Day!
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is it going to be Heg's day? (In fact, is ANY day, Heg's Day?) ...and will 'Midget Moira' be waiting....nay, panting..... for him on his return from action?
Will Noofy, the OBT Boys, Rostic, Karaya, IIJG27Rich, Bondi, Starik..... and all the other ravening Blue hordes complete the destruction of the RAF in one fell sweep?

Are we going to let them? Or will Jack Max, Damon, Knighty, Derda, Snargle, Dazza, Baffin and Pattle...not to forget our Hero...Heggers..... and all the other gallant Boys in Blue.....be able to hold them back?

Three big Events to enjoy! Don't miss the first:

I am not surprised the Luftwaffe lost the Battle of Britain when that General in the video of post #2 above is pointing at Hastings when mentioning Hawkinge…

Thankfully the CloD generation has developed better navigation skills, and you can bet our eggs will be delivered accurately this time

    Brilliant!!!

I've been waiting for this post ever since they started teasing it months ago.

Can't wait for the briefing to see what these guys have cooked up.

Reds I'll see you in The Lounge

Blues I'll see you in my reflex sights... hopefully...

Thank you everybody who took time out of their lives to work on these events. Time is the most limited commodity around and spending yours to entertain others for free is... beyond what I am able to express with letters and emoticons

    THANK YOU!!!

Yes..Everytime I dig out my DVD copy of 1969 Battle of Britain and watch it at the end I run to the PC and fly for a couple of hours. This move and Tora Tora Tora just seem to grab me in "Flying Soul" the most out of them all.

This event sounds like a load of fun, would love to get stuck in (and I don't mean Moira!), I'll be away on secret ops that weekend... but hopefully there'll be a re-run sometime soon

Is it possible to get a full list of the flyable planes for this event? Some of us maybe have to reinstall und prepare the planes again or a new player has to learn to manage a specific plane.

    Tuesday 13 August 1940.

    6h00 in the morning.

Today, it seems that the Luftwaffe has decided to move on to a new stage in its offensive over England.

According to information from our Intelligence Services, it seems obvious that the Germans understood that any attempt at a maritime blockade was impossible for the Luftwaffe alone.

Our informants confirm that the German Luftwaffe High Command have decided to change strategy and launch massive raids against Fighter Command.

According to the first radar plots already received, it seems obvious that the final battle for the invasion of our homeland has just begun!

Many formations of German planes are currently gathering above France...

The first is regrouping above Wissant (CA.42) at very high altitude; probably a group of Do 17s from Kampfgeschwader II.

The second is maneuvering between Saint Omer (CK.39) and Calais (CE.44) at medium altitude; probably a group of Stukas from Lehrgeschwader 1.

    All aircraft are ordered to......SCRAMBLE!!!

    No 65, 604, 266, 603, 501, 72, 605 Squadrons must take off immediately!!!

Intercept all enemy aircraft before they can reach the coast.
Organize coastal patrols and interception raids over the Channel.

God save the King, England and our Empire!

    Available aircraft:

    Spitfire Ia (100oct)

No 65 Squadron at Manston (BX 52).

No 266 Squadron at Eastchurch (BQ 53).

No 603 Squadron at Hornchurch (BH 56).

No 72 Squadron at Biggin Hill (BF 51).

    Hurricanes (DH 5-20 100oct), Hurricanes I (Rotol 100oct)

No 501 Squadron at Kenley (BD 51).

No 605 at Croydon (BC 52).

No 604 at Canterbury (BU 50).

The radar menu available on TAB 7 1 will give you the position of enemy aircraft relative to your position, if you are close enough.

    <Description>
    Tuesday 13 August 1940.

    6h00 in the morning.

Comrades: today Luftwaffe High Command has decided to launch our final assault on England!

    Adlertag has arrived!

Be ready for the biggest air battle in history!

All aircraft available to the Luftwaffe must be ready to take off to attack England.

Our objective is to destroy the RAF, the last obstacle before the final assault.

We must force Fighter Command to send all their aircraft into battle. Then,
shoot them down and destroy all their infrastructure.

Our mission is to force the British to negotiate..... or capitulate!

Comrades: have a good flight and especially...... Good Hunting!

    PRIORITY OBJECTIVES (Fighter pilots):

You must plan to escort the first two bomber raids of the day.

Rendezvous at 6h25 in the morning, with the first bomber group above Wissant (CA.42) at 7500 meters. These aircraft will be Do 17's from Kampfgeschwader II. Escort them over Kent until their return to France.

Rendezvous at 6h50 in the morning, with the second bomber group above Calais (CE.44) at 4000 meters. These aircraft will be Ju87 Stukas from Lehrgeschwader 1. Again, escort them over Kent and return with them to France.

If you fail to rendezvous with the bombers, they will be unescorted and vulnerable over England and you will be solely responsible for the fate of your comrades!

Organize close escort above the bombers! As Colonel Adolph Galland said it makes you 'a dog on a leash' but this is absolutely necessary!

Some fighter patrols will nevertheless be able to patrol above the bomber's objectives to deny the sky to defending RAF pilots.

Organize patrols from Littlestone (BS.45) to Ramsgate (BY.53) and to the south east suburbs of London. (BE.51)

    SECONDARY OBJECTIVES (Bomber pilots):

    Ashford Engine Oil Factory (BR.48)

Mershant ships lying in Dover (BX.47) and Folkestone (BV.46) harbours.

Dover (BX.48) and Rye (BP.44) Radar Stations

Royal Navy ships entering the Thames Estuary. Sink them!

    Available aircraft:

    Bf 109 E1, E3, E4

    II /JG 52 at Coquelles (CE 43).

    I /JG 51 at Saint Iglevert (CD 42).

    I /JG 26 at Audembert (CC 42).

    II /JG 26 at Marquise (CC 41).

    I /JG 53 at Sempy (CF 33).

    Bf 110 C2, C4, C4B, C7

    III /ZG 76 at Boulogne (CA 38).

    Ju 87 B-2

    IV.(St)/LG 1 at Oye Plage

The radar menu available on TAB 7 1 will give you the position of enemy aircraft relative to your position, if you are close enough.

I noted there were no heavy bombers nor Bf 109 fighter bombers available.
So if we want to bomb targets it is only in Stukas or Bf 110s, confirm?

That's it Noofy, but for the rest, from the second or third mission I don't remember anymore, I prepared lots of nice targets for you and your Ju 88 will be available
It was a campaign really focused on hunting at the start, then I modified it so that as many pilots as possible could have fun.

Hunting without a G.50 is (for me) like listening to Wagner without the brass…
But no worries, a Bf 109 will do just fine

Why are the 85 octane versions of Spit and Hurri added, that were never used in the BOB (and nobody ever flies online), but the Spit IIa that was available from early 1940 on is left out?
Also the Beaufighter does not really fit to the timeframe.

No error on your part (except the Beau). Adlertag was in August 1940. The Spit IIa came into service in April 1941…

Do you have a source for that date at all please, as I'm keen to nail the date down. The closest I had so far was a production chart (I forget where I got it from) that has the MkII 'produced' from June 40

    Thank you Noofy

I also check for my part because I have a source which says that the Spit IIa actually began to enter service in August 1940 but I am not sure that it took part in the combats which concern us.
For the Beaufighter I added it for pilots on the red side who wanted to fly twin engines without checking the date of arrival in the combat zone... (probably after the first bombings on London according to my sources)

Thank you all for the comments, do not hesitate to continue to give your impressions on the campaign, the briefings, and anything else that may seem interesting to you.
I try to do my best so that we have a good time and that as many of us as possible have fun on this fantastic simulator. Satisfying as many people as possible is my priority but it is not easy, hoping that you will have a good time above the Channel and the south of England.

    Hi Noofy,

if you're referring to this information on the Wikipedia page you mentioned above - "The RAF had re-equipped with the new version by April 1941.[31]", I understand it a different way - that the replacement of all MkI Spitfires with MkII ones was completed in April 1941. In other words, all Spitfires MkI were taken out of service in combat squadrons and replaced with MkII ones by April 1941.

The same page you're referrring to shows a picture of one Spitfire MkIIa and says following - "Spitfire Mk IIa P7666 of 41 Squadron. P7666 "Observer Corps" was flown by Squadron Leader Donald Finlay; Finlay shot down two Bf 109s in P7666 in November 1940."

And this Wikipedia page - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermarine_Spitfire shows a picture of P7666 too and mentions this - "Although resolving the problems took time, in June 1940, 10 Mk IIs were built; 23 rolled out in July, 37 in August, and 56 in September.[37]"

I think DerDa is right. A small number of Spitfires MkII was available and probably operational already during the Battle of Britain period.

    Josef
