Seems to be the usual cheesy story: two pilots both got shot down over the desert, they have to depend on each other for survival, a wonderful friendship starts to bloom, dah di dah di dah.

One review mentions that there is not a single 110 to be seen in the movie.

After giving this the twice over isn't that a real DB Trop 109 nose in one of the DVD box pictures? I'd buy it just to see that but they wont ship it to Canada

Seems to be the usual cheesy story: two pilots both got shot down over the desert, they have to depend on each other for survival, a wonderful friendship starts to bloom, dah di dah di dah.

There's a movie that takes that general premise and does something interesting with it. It's called Hell in the Pacific, and the only actors in it are Lee Marvin and Mifune Toshiro, both of whom were WWII veterans - Private First Class Marvin was a Marine who took part in 21 amphibious assaults and earned the Purple Heart during the Battle of Saipan, and Sergeant Mifune was an IJA aerial photograph analyst turned reluctant kamikaze instructor. Each character only speaks their native language, and there's no dubbing or subtitles, so, unless you speak English and Japanese, you're forced into the shoes of whichever character happens to speak a language you know.

And apparently the ending

There are lot's of movies with that subject and not just set in WWII. 'Hell in the Pacific' was just moved to outer space in 'Enemy Mine'.
There is another good one set in the desert 'Taxi to Tobruk', a French movie. But both this one and 'Hell in the Pacific' work because of very good actors, intelligent scripts and professional directors and production. From the reviews I saw about the movie in question it seems that all this 'craftsmanship' is missing.

Another stereotype that immediately catches the eye is that naturally both 'Fighter Pilots' are aces. Not just that, the German is also a Lieutenant Colonel, no less. At least it seems that he's not of old nobility with a 'von' in his name ...
