    Big Screen Beyond

Used to have a Valve index, and sold it to get an HP G2,

I kept the lighthouses and knuckles controllers in the hope that maybe I'd be able to use them withe G2 on day... which as luck would have it... I could.

    anyway......

I'm am reliably informed that my Big Screen Beyond will arrive tomorrow by the end of the day. (as will my repaired motorbike tank..... which I’m also super excited about)

    Knuckles are on charge...

Windows mixed reality uninstalled (never got on with that... found it glitchy and generally cumbersome)

So its back to lighthouses and reliable tracking....

To say im exited is a massive understatement

I gave the G2 to my daughter.

To say she is excited is and understatement !

I will probably post my thoughts here at some point in the near future.

I can't really remember what the Index looked like now, so it will be a comparison to the G2 only.

    laters peeps!

    Re: Big Screen Beyond

    okie dokie.....

    so far... not great!

which isnt what i was expecting at all... but.... that's what it is !

My IPD is way off on this. (I say way off... 0.5mm maybe) which is MASSIVE

when you order .. or at least a few months later... You scan your head on a iPhone... that supposedly sorts the face gasket to fit your (in my case) sexy sculpted and chiseled face bones... and in your case (yeah.. you heard me...) less sexy eyeball IPD.

well... erm... fail on that then !

The sweet spot... as its called... ie the amount yours eyes can be off centre / see stuff not blurry....

    it's really limited.

Id be ok with tunnel vision if it was actually set for myIPD... but this is *.kin miles off.

    On the plus side though...

It's great to be back on steam VR without WMR...

soooo much better. I'm not remotely surprised Windows are junking WMR. Is total shite!!

    so... back to the Beyond...

i think if my IPD was bang on I'd be very happy.

its light, resolution is great. tunnel vision is sadly there... G2 is way more forgiving in that regard.

That said.. direct viewing (like looking imeditly at) clarity is superb... really great

Just that it's pretty tunnel vision.

It really needs an IPD adjustment built in.

There is no way you could play with this with friends without that.

which might be ok... but this one.. i cant even play alone right now. ha !

I have no doubt Big Screen will sort my IPD issue out. And i will be happy. But its definitly precision made... and that means you can't have your friends around for gaming.

one face... one beautifully chisled face (mine) it's way too bespoke...

I don't think this would have been "perfect" even if they had got it right.

even when its right it's very clear i wont be able to share this.

    Re: Big Screen Beyond

Please keep us posted on in-game experience and IPD service/support. I have a 1% of population IPD of 56mm so there are a limited number of choices. I have a G2 but it's IPD only went down to 58mm so never ideal. Given what is happening on WMR front, I will be keenly interested in you experience with this headset. I believe Pimax Crystal only supports down to 58mm via hardware, maybe a bit more via software.

    Re: Big Screen Beyond

    Okey doke.. so

today I wnt to the optician to get my far sight IPD measured...

seems that 63mm of on th emoeny (30 left 33 right... squinky face)

Ive been in touch with Big Screen.

and we went through a few things.

one was removing the face gasket to get right up close to th elenses.... BIG difference, so they are making a new thin as possible gasket... my IPD is defintly too wide, so they are sending me a bare bones Big Screen Beyond that is specifically for IPD measurement... i get that... measure up... ship that unit plus my one back to them, theny ship out a unit that matches my IPD.

once all tat is dones i think I can give a far more accurate review.

what I woudl say is that the glare is a lot more pronounced thn i thought it whuodl be.

    BUT...

also the form factor.... frankly if i have to make a compromise to have something so tiny.... im probably ok with that.

so... a few tweeks needed on my unit, but this is all being done at zero cost to me.

i do think an adjustible IPD on these would make a LOT more sense.... especially if you want to share with friends.

The tollerances are so precise that it pretty much rules out any sharing potential, which is a shame.

    so... anyway....

looks like a few more weeks to get it sorted....

    but the support is there.

somthingelse i woudl say that is a mssive bonus...

going back to Steam VR without Windows Mixed Reality bolted on top is a god send.

    Its a million times better.

    Re: Big Screen Beyond

    So...

New face gasket arrived, thinner, much much better... FOV is still (to me at least) too narrow... but definitely better.

and the blur at the edges is less... though still there and that is IPD related.

The IPD measuring gizmo has been dispatched and should arrive in the coming days.

Now... I went and had my far IPD checked at an opticians, and it is 63mm.

which is also the IPD of my Big Screen Beyond...

I relayed this to the Big Screen guys and they said they recommend 1mm less than the IPD measured.

    Huh?!!??

Certainly my own messing about suggests the lenses in this unit is between 1 and 2mm too far apart for me, despite being a 63mm IPD unit.

A few google searches suggest the IPDs they are shipping are very commonly too wide.

I suspect they screwed something up there, why on earth would the IPD number cast onto he unit not be representative of your actual IPD !??!

anyway... all looks like it’s getting sorted... but it’s not exactly a quick process... and having a different IPD unit to your actual IPD so it matches you IPD is frankly ridiculous.

I think it’s a mistake on their par that they are really regretting. Must be costing them a lot in exchanges.

Anyway… the customer support is there. The Timescales are, less than ideal.

But that is where we re.

Once I Have a unit that actually fits my IPD I will give another update.

    Re: Big Screen Beyond

They just shipped out their IPD measurement tool.

Basically a headset (shell of the real thing)) i put my new gace gasket on... and then read my IPD as Big Screen make them

Which seems to be oddly wider than the actual numbers on their units.

    Anyway....

I think they screwed that up.

What they haven't screw up is trying to sort it out.

    It's taking time. But....

    Its also being dealt with.

    Hi(gh) Sea's
Looking at your avatar I think I may have spotted your problem, you appear to have an issue with your right eye, as in, you don't have one. This could be impacting on your attempts to measure your IPD as if you have only one eye you have no IPD as such. Also, while I don't want to be unkind, your lack of ears may make it difficult to wear any sort of headset properly. You should buy a 50" tv. I take no pleasure in the fact that you have an unfortunately shaped head and I thrust that you will receive these comments in the spirit in which they are sent.
Don't let Grudges fester and poison your future happiness......get your revenge as quickly as possible.

    Right...

    IPD measuring kit arrived today.

It's a Bigncreen Beyon shell mounted on an aluminium frame with a large brass wheel on the right hand side anmd a loakd og brass cogs on its inerds.

I'm not kidding.... It looks mega steam punk!...

    will take a photo later

It's a work of art in itself !!

So tohight I will plug that in (it hasa usb C port so it obviously powers up something... and has lenses....

No idea if it is actually a working headset or just a pair of screens with a self generated image to allow allignment only.

its damn cool looking though !

Once thats sorted it goes in teh box along with my unit, and goes off to the Netherlands for exchange....

They really have got this customer care down well... might take a while, but i get the imprssion they are fully on the case !

    Re: Big Screen Beyond

Eyeballs tested using the Cyberpunk gizmo and data sent to BigScreen.

Defiintly got it better with this thing... its quite heavy thogh !!

I would say that the sweet spot for focus is very small... so its a bit like having tunnel vision even though the field of view is... well its not huge, but its ok... The useful FOV though is pretty tight, so its a lot of head turning to look directly at things rather than glancing around.

That said when you ARE looking directly at something the clarity is superb.

Where it really stands out though (other than the resolution) is the focal range...

The distance you can see in focus from really close to pertty far is remarkable when compared to the Index or the G2.

I suspect a lot of thos is a getting used to it... and given how light the consumer unit is the hoving my head all over might not bother me that much in the long run... with this heavier test unit on its a noticable annoyance.

possibly why they didnt include adjustible IPD... weight...

Anyway... so far so good, very glad to be waya from Windows Mixed Reality and back on the Steam VR platform.

    Re: Big Screen Beyond

    So...

I’ve spent quite a bit of time messing about with this now and I’m pretty sure my required IPD (as far as these units go its 62.2mm

The original scan I did suggested 63mm.

and when I went to get measure afterwards at the opticians they came up with 63mm over 5 tests.

for whatever reason it appears that for the Big Screen Beyond need an IPD 1mm narrower. Which kind of sounds like they got the calibration wrong when marking their units up.

No idea if that’s the case or what, but it seems I need one of their 62mm units.

maybe I’m just super sensitive (I sooo am... )

Big screen have been really really helpful with this. They sent me their instruction they have internally on how to read the scales on the Cyberpunk headset. which allowed me to work out it’s something like a 3/4 turn on the big brass adjustment wheel per mm of IPD... which made it a LOT easier to go back and fourth between settings when my eyes got tired / relying on my brain compensating.

You need a rest every now and then or your brain just compensates and you struggle to find the ideal. A headache at half an hour will tell you when you need to stop and go in fresh.

A bit of sim racing this evening should be just the ticket to check for the umpteenth time if im right at 62mm.

    Almost there !

Ive been in Half Life Alyx for a bit. I got the game free with a 1080ti… ages ago… and never played it.

    The visuals are stunning.

I will be trying Project Cars 2 later, which has always suffered with blurry mess in the distance, progressively less so when upgrading headsets… in the Rift it was fun but visually messy… the index was way better, then the G2 better still… all had reasonable clarity of the interior of the car but anything from 10m and out was always bad but progressively less so with each new headset,… curios to see how this measures up… so far the far distance clarity in the Big Creen Beyond has been a bit of a revelation to me. Will let you know how I get on later… or more likely tomorrow.

And probably give it a bit of a round up generally.

OK.. so... about 10 weeks after teh first unit arrived....

and the replacement has arrived. 62mm IPD, 1mm less than my verified optician measurement of 63mm.

I havent tried it yet... and doubt I will get the chance before Sunday.

    Re: Big Screen Beyond

    Okey doke....

    This is way better.

Having gone through the process of dialing in one of the IPD measuring unts its clear i need a 62.3mm unit

I can still tell its not quite right. it needs yo be balanced between looking at yuor hand about 150mm in front of yur face, out to infinity.

and these lenses have sucha small sweet spot that getting the IPD bang on is critical.

which means i need a half milimeter unit, which they dont make.

the 62mm for me is the best fit for very close up to far away.

and the in sharp focus range is limited as i have said before

    But....

accepting having tunnel vsion in the carity... its quite incredible.

    it weighs nothing.

    its visually stunning.

field of view is ok at bst. clarity withing that fov is limited...

best way to describe this is look at somthing now,and withough moving your eyes or your head. Figure out what else yuo can see,

loads of stuff. but you cant clarely see any of it unless you move your eyes to look at it.

this is the same, except you most defintilely need to move your head to look at it, which takes longer... neck musceles are slowet than eys glances.

its not perfect by a lonhway... but...

    it weighs nothing

the clarity is amazing whenlookingdirectly at something.

in Half life Alyx this is a revelation.

    its pretty good in MSFS

i havent yet dipped back into the Cliffs VR beta (shame on me)

I think for flight combat it woudl be a challange.

Overall... best headest I have ever tried.

appologies fo any ytypows its just that i cabnst types so sshlkskk;sl uisydty d whn its getting late

    Re: Big Screen Beyond

So I have a 56mm IPD. Small head, big brain? Sure Jan.

Doesn't look like this is the way to go. Great concept, great support, not so great at end of the day. Too bad.

I have a lens implant in one eye due to cataract surgery at a young age. I have near sightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism (shout out to Carol Burnett... very obscure shout out). Anyone with bifocals has been well trained to move head around to optimize vision sweet spot in real life.

Looks like you need a nanometer measurement device. geshmerglflurtzen.

    Somnium VR1?

    Re: Big Screen Beyond

Once its dialed in its pretty sweet.

but yeah, be prepared to look at the thing you re looking at. using your neck not just your normal swivelly eyes.

Its the best heasdeset i have had by a long long way.

i just seek perfection. and i dont think anyone will make that.

    as compromises go....

this is really rather good !

    Ive only mentioned its downsides.

    the plaus?

    it weight nothing.

its like you are not waring it.

my headphones weigh 4 times as much.

shifting your head fast?... you just dont notice.

the total blakout of anything outside the VR view... is ... you are right there there. plane and simple.

amd the visual; clarity is awesome. and the distance of that from right in your hand to is far far beyond.... waaaaayyy better any headset i have had before.

    i really like this.

    Love the tracking.

The inside out of the HPG2 vs the Valve index was a massive backward step. kinda like they got the whole concept "inside out"

On the whole this is great.

bit tunnel visiony.... but hell... over all.. its really quite something.
