    Re: Show us your cockpit

Can anyone advise the typical postition of pedals, stick and seat relative to one another.

both in plan and cross section?

presumably the stick should be at a height where the forearm is at 90 degrees to the body. so... belly button height?

obviously there will be discrepancy for long legs and what not. but is there a "standard" rough set of dimensions?

    Re: Show us your cockpit

I think..if I can remember this right. Ergonomics of a cockpit was rolled around the aerodynamics of the aircraft design . hence the so many configurations of cockpit. Plus over time the fatigue factor of said position over time. So if you at building one for yourself. Build one that best fits your own body type for maximum configurability for comfort. Wish I had the time money and effort to put into such a beautiful fun project. Maybe one of these days

    Yeah...

I'm going to go with the "Stick at belly button height between the knees" .... and then fit the rest around that....

    Re: Show us your cockpit

As long as your comfort level is there. Just a thought. The f16 cockpit has the stick to the side as well as the Airbus aircraft. Reason being is to extend comfort and keep at bay fatigue. Plus the seat is reclined.reason for that is to pull a higher G factor than sitting right up...as one would do in a car.

I have set up my position roughly like in the second link. It needed some weeks to do some fine adjustments until it really felt comfortable. Now I can sit in there for hours, and even sleep if I have to

    Re: Show us your cockpit

    Here is my latest SimPit.

THe first prototype I made I had left enough room for a seat and armrests.... I was an idiot, the sides of the pit should have been the armrest.

The bright colour is what it actually looks like. The darker colour photos are from 01:00 am, as I had the need to finish this. I did make a mistake and mad the cutouts about .025" larger than the template dimensions, without measuring what I actually had. As such the HOTAS didn't fit. So I filed the openings larger. Finishing up in the wee hours of the morning. It all fits.

I have the Saitek[now logitech] panels, throttle quadrant, and trim wheels. The TrackIR 5, X-55 HOTAS, and MFG Crosswind rudders. This pit has a 65" Curved Samsung display as my monitor.

Not shown is a Premier movie theater seat, that is installed. Like I mentioned this is the second prototype, and I plan on having this made from Fundermax Interior Plus for a selection of colours, and durability. [http://www.rapidmaterials.com/Max-Interior_c_1152.html], and I am currently making a couple for some friends.

I am working on buying switches, buttons, and knobs for making my own dashboard, I want to get away from using 3rd party hardware. I figure I'll have a WWII, and Modern fighter dashboard option.

I'll try to add a photo/video of everything working/installed later.

Looks like a comfey chair ! I'm using a short bar stool.... a minor upgrade from the three legged stool I was using.

I put my Warthog grip on the gunfighter base. Mainly because I wanted to keep the familiar layout. Works great.

My chair is definately the weekest part of my setup !!

    That buttkicker gizmo looks interesting...

    Re: Show us your cockpit

I sawed the monitor stands off the Obutto. I gave up on triple monitors but it is comfortable. Not shown is the pillow i put behind my back so its not so reclined. Simulates a chute
I got the WH adapter but decided to try the KG12 for a while. Moved some of the controls to the other devices, now I just have to remember where I put them when I fly
The Buttkicker works great. No doubts when you are being hit. tTurn it on high and you can feel every piston firing in the DB601. Lacking any access to hardware here or elaborate tools like a drill press in Korea I had to settle for a chunk of lumber and a half dozen pipe clamps. So far its held up ok.

Darn it TF/1C. We need telemetry feedback without the memory mapping hax and sketchy port scanners!

    Re: Show us your cockpit

Getting excited for 4.5's imminent release.
I ordered the MFG crosswind rudder for my Birthday in June (right?! I spoil myself!) -and have been very happy with them.
Have been meaning to rebuild my stick - a MSFFB2 mated with a CH Combatstick. Bought a used CH Fighterstick (MORE BUTTONS) some time ago and felt it was finally time to act on some Big Idea's i've been having.

    Old Stick (*version 2.0)
    IMG_4227.jpg

I didn't like how tall this stick was, I couldn't fit it under my desk, and it had too much throw. I had to sit away from the desk edge and the keyboard; and also had to pile stuff in front of my rudder pedals to get them away from the wall.
Also, my idea of designing a forward angle and double bend into the extension never felt practical... (most previous Flight Sim experience was in helo sims.)
My new (3.0) version needed to be shorter for better throw and ergonomics. This also made cutting out a notch in my chair necessary. I've also always wanted to raise my rudder pedals off the floor a bit for a more laid back posture. (besides I'm short-legged hehe)
Last but not least: I've always really wanted to incorporate some kind of friction knob or tensioner so that I could maintain stable flight whilst checking maps, getting another beverage, or voiding aforementioned libations.

I had several ideas on how to do this last bit, and finally settled on a suitable, albeit expensive solution: Ram Mount. [ https://www.rammount.com/ ]
    The results:

    IMG_6188.JPG.jpeg

    IMG_6187.JPG.jpeg

    IMG_6195.JPG.jpeg

*Those wires will eventually be cleaned up, especially the one that goes from the grip to the base.
For the MFG Crosswind Pedals I built a base that raises my feet off the floor by 2.25"
I needed to cut a notch in the center of the pedal base to accommodate a desk leg. I also left a space underneath to route the cables from the stick.

    IMG_6189.JPG.jpeg

    IMG_6190.JPG.jpeg

The notch in the chair was easy as well... I think that i will take a little more out at the edges after testing for the last week. When I'm happy I'll patch with a leather patching kit.

    IMG_6192.JPG.jpeg

The whole thing put together ~S!~

Cliffs of Dover RAF Button Box

Knocked up Button Box (RAF bias) because I don't use a HOTAS and don't have enough buttons!

Made from A4 piece of Perspex, a Leo Bodnar BBI 32 and MS Publisher (for the face plate). Sits on a small table when flying, so I don't have to reach for the Keyboard.

You could (if you had the inclination) knock a cover up in MS Publisher (or similar), print to Glossy Photo Paper, Laminate. And just position it over the original?

When finished with, you just remove your cover.

I fitted the final two gauges. Fuel & Oil Pressure. Fully working with CoD data.

Need to ping Colander a PM. The fuel pressure gauge receives no data, it's 0.

Can anyone using Virtual Cockpit confirm that the Hurricane Fuel Pressure Gauge (not the Fuel Gauge) is responding to in game telemetry please. Thank you.

1lokos once again I am in your debt - thank you for taking a look at this for me.

The Action Start / Stop is for Mrillis Action! (recording software). I use Num1 to Start/Stop the recording - I actually have it programmed to my Cine Camera Switch on the Instrument Panel but can't be arsed leaning forward to switch it on sometimes. So having it to one side of me while flying is convenient. This is programmed via HIDMacro so I can have Key-Up, Key-Down events.

I have come to the conclusion though that CoD doesn't like any type of overlay software. If I have action running, the game will crash (randomly). If action is not running, the game carries on until the end of the sortie. This crashing also applies to OBS or Shadowplay. Yet TS Overlay doesn't seem to affect CoD - sigh!

But once again my friend, thanks for the VC check.

Here are the working Oil and Fuel Pressure Gauges reacting to in game telemetry (engine from cold to start).

Fuel goes to 5psi (as does in game gauge). Oil goes to just below 60psi, but then creeps up to just below 90psi when in the air.

On engine start, you can see Boost going to -4, and Oil Temp creeping up (Water is slower, so you don't see it climb like the Oil)!

Hi Zeb. I can see the embed OK.

I know some embeds don't show correctly though: https://vimeo.com/241373671

The attitude indicator spool up looks great. I've been wanting to make mechanical versions of all those gauges for arduino.....Someday.

    HBC BFP Instruments

Stepper driven instruments dry fitted to my BFP before painting. Just the Artificial Horizon to fit.

The whole cockpit will be real instruments.

    Re: Show us your cockpit

So despite having a warthog stick and throttle, my home made trim box with its gear and flaps levers, radiators and mixture sliders...

quadrant.jpg (bad photo but you get the idea... there are two more trim wheels on the right hand side that you can't see... same as that one out the front)

and that switch box I posted above made from a comms unit...

oh look here it is again: switch.jpg

I appear to have once again run out of switches...

so... after surfing the 'bay for a while I got lucky on this light control switch box:

    £20

Soon to be Arduino'ed and become my latest set of new switches.

    This is addictive !

    Re: Show us your cockpit

    s-l1600.jpg

so... its been gutted and de wired...

    and this :

    Switch Box Wiring.jpg

will happen as soon as I have some heat shrink... and some more wire...

I have a bag of assorted spaggetied in a heap wire... but its all pretty heavy gauge...

most of the switches in this one are three way.

On my other box I just wired one side of the two way switches.. and set MMJoy2 up to signal a pulse on "on" and again on "off" so they behave as toggle commands.

Cant bind them in game as "on" and "off" commands though as its the same signal being sent on both clicks.

That's fine as long as you remember to switch everything the right way before loading the game.

... in hind sight it would have been more flexible if I have wired both sides of each switch as separate key presses. ... but in not going to be re doing it. I simply cannot be bothered (which is a massive MASSIVE lie and it will probably be done the same time as I do this new one)

This new one though I plan to wired up every one of the inputs on every switch. So that a total of 34 possible signals on this new one... (and from the existing 22 on the existing switch box up to 38)

Haven't really got much use for the middle inputs from the switches on the new box though... I suppose i could use one for select left engines, select right engines with centre as select all engines.. than makes some sence...

Anyhow... I figured I'd wire EVERYTHING while I'm in there...

pretty switchy around these parts these days.....
