    Re: Dimensions of spitfire stick

I see you used a pushbutton switch for the brake lever, why not use an analog control for the brakes?

Well, looks the drawing author choose use the K.I.S.S.

Anyway don't make much difference use analog or digital control for brakes, because when you hit a button or key is send for game B,B,B,B,B,B,B,B, not B - was in the way in CloD release.

DCS (WWII) planes for example, work very well with brake on buttons.

I use an analog axis for brakes on Hurricane and feedback shows percentage of brakes applied, so game does recognize

Yes, with TF MOD the British brakes can be set on axis - in original game are only button/key and only ON or OFF.
TF MOD too tweak the brakes in keys, leaving less "ON/OFF".

What I say is for practical purpose, in this case of this DIY Spitfire spade are not much advantage in use in axis face the complication in add pot and gears in the spade.

I've been working on a spade grip (still in the early stages)...

I do plan on an analog brake, I have it worked out, I just haven't modeled it in yet.

That looks nicely done! I may use it as a reference, though mine is actually optimized to be used in a sim, rather than to be historically accurate.
    EDIT:
Tried to get to this post but keep getting an error when I try to go to simhq.com. If he is selling 3d printed grips he probably hasn't posted the CAD file for download.

SimHQ are out since last night...

And yes, that guy sell printed things - he has half of Spit 1:1 "kit" for print on Shapeways - and don't tell you ever what is the Spit Spade fire button diameter.

Yeh, Rossco does some nice drafting work using original references. He's been very helpful getting me up to speed on some spit related stuff.

I've been thinking about picking up one of his spade grips and making a run of sand-cast aluminum grips. Someday.

For this I think is better use di Terlizzi Spade kit 1:1 for mold - is modeled after a real part - and cost less.

Seems the guy plan sell this "Spit kit". Testing with (DCS) Mk.IXe.

    Other videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq4...laHH0Y-CCB_1Ug

He did include the radio control box push buttons - but DCW Spit has their operation wrong, just copied from P-51 that have a push-to-talk button on throttle and in Mk.IXe is not used in this way, need use the lever in control box, that resulting don't work as should.

But looks he use that "radio control box" as "button box" for other functions...

    EDIT - Their blog https://79vraf.wordpress.com/2017/10...t-test-in-dcs/

Good job in this MK.V+ "spade".

    https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php...6&postcount=24

Nice solution in use a double 'camera only' button, what add 9 buttons in the grip, but don't compromise much the visual.

    Spitfire spade "BBC" fire button

Fire button fro Browning and Cannons, used in Mk.V and latter models.

Safety lock mechanism was simplified (for 3D print) to one piece - but work like original: block fire buttons and rise/lower the indicator pin.

As "air valves" use two momentary buttons SPST:

Button throw ~1.9mm (in CH, VKB, VPC sticks the B3F switch used has ~0.25~0.5mm). This button has no "click", a Knitter model with same format has "click", but probable different dimensions, needing adaptations.

The size of "BBC" is a compromise with different measures, a picture on Web say that "BBC" head is 34.5 x 25.5 x 64.5 (WxPxL), a guy who have several "warbirds" 3D print parts in Shapeways say 31.67 x 27.64 x 69.77. Different pictures show variations in between models.

I have no 3D print neither access locally, the model is not tested. Not sure about the resolution of drawings - Sketchup (Make) is not good for this kind of 3D, no true circles, but is "3D newbie" friendly.

Case someone want try, in the drawings all objects are "solid groups" - what means suitable for 3D print. A plugin export for STL.

    Lokos,

I like your switch design. Next week I'll be getting a full Sherline setup (after years of waiting and saving) with an indexer for cutting small stuff like watch gears. This would be a nice project to take on.

I recently picked up a free copy of Fusion 360. Free meaning if you make less than 100k USD a year, which is a lot of us, they allow a maker license at no cost. You just have to renew once a year. I used Solidworks Pro for several years and this is far better, with far fewer crashes and tool workarounds. Really nice parametric stuff. So much easier than Blender too. I looked at saving up for Sketchup, but as you implied, it seems more geared for architectural stuff, not more towards engineering and precision. Hopefully they allow users outside the US to use it.

    Re: Dimensions of spitfire stick

Been doing some work on a spade grip fixture. Rossco has done a nice cast from a 3D print, which looks good. I want to get a kiln next year to cast a realistic grip from aluminum like he did, but I thought it'd be fun to make one out of welded mild steel. I'll be welding the attachments and shaping it as I go. The fixture is to get the 3/4" tubing bent correctly before cuts and welding.

I'm also thinking about slotting some rotary encoders inside the bore with knurled wheels barely protruding + some touch sensors or buttons below the black pitch thread layer...all on the back side. I have some epoxy resin to cover the thread, but I've thought about using black japanese engraver's pitch as well (special mix made from pine rosin).

    Re: Dimensions of spitfire stick

Highseas, ye need not fret. Some of it came out a bit spazzy and maybe a second one is in order....if you don't mind a bit of English on thine yoke (will need some Beeman's bubble gum on some of the kinks...like in the Rocketeer). Might be doing some aluminum casts next year too.

Some welding today. Going to have to try something different the next time as it was really tricky controlling the temps and bending along the fixture. Was a bit scared as it has been years since I've welded pipe.
Will be cutting out the gun button later.

Alas, when I get sleepy at work tomorrow, I can pull this out of my bag and make propellplrplrplr and tacatacataca noises.

Very detailed, include the tactile "detent" before lever engage boost, an detail that only recently appear in "replicas" for the real thing use.
