Has a drawing of "goseneck", that without spad measure ~20 cm height, use as reference to calculate the remainder.
My 0,02$: as rule of the thumb whit original joystick gimbal extension should not fall below the level of the chair, that's means ~10" extension, to not overstress the original mechanism. Consider also that Spitfire pilot sit lower than a typical "office chair" pilot.
To use full length -as real plane - the ideal is build a new strengthened gimbal (a complicated mater)...

I'd love a spade grip....the only thing that puts me off is that I'd need to put loads of buttons on it...and it would probably not be as good to fly with

I'd love a set up like the OP's last pic. That's one of those custom Spit-pits, which cost far too much wonga for a computer game. I'd still have one though, if money was no object. Which it isn't of course. Money isn't an object, it's an abstract concept which we're all led to believe is real, based on whether or not our great leaders have a good store of shiny yellow metal in a vault somewhere. But at least it pays the bills, which makes it appear quite real. To all intents and purposes.
OK, I'll shut up.
I'll continue, The concept of currency in regards to............................The 4th pix is very cool! Have a look at this one. Add wings and and engine prolly go flying. http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.ph...other_Spit_pit

So here's my offering of a home made Spit rig. And yes it has a 4 way on the gun camera button. Not meant to be a replica just to give the feel of a floor mounted stick of the period. It flies very well (unlike me) and greatly increases immersion. Whole body movement is required to throw the plane around rather than the twitch of the wrist. I am exaggerating but you get the idea. And yes the trim wheels are black painted jam jar lids.photo (2).jpg

If for "ring" you mean the "Spad", is rought 14 cm in maximum horizontal width (I did some "Scketchup with the drawing posted above).
Use this drawing for reference, resize with graphics program, print and use as reference for your project.

Instead you can buy a resin copy from Niall Paterson of www.creativecockpits.com.
He has a version with inner shaft diameter suitable to fit into joystick shaft (for stick MOD).
The copy require sand and paint, plus confection of fittings like hand brake, but is more affordable that metal casting ones.
He send me this picture at some time:
http://tinypic.com/r/ou0ev5/5
This version have a extra hole bellow MG button for fit a HAT - but he can do one without this.
If you have access to tube bend shop you can make one with aluminum or copper tube.
Sample of one done with tube:

The ring is about 130mm across and made from casting resin. I intend to get an ali one cast from it at some point. It will look better with some bike handlebar tape on it. The rest of the yoke and stick is bent scrap ali from the skip at work, the chain and sprocket is off the net (robotniks.com I think). I had no dimensions to go from just photos and the Spit cockpit from IL2. The potentiometers, switches etc are from Radio Spares. And of course the trim wheels are from Strawberry Jam jars (acknowledgments to Robinsons Ltd).
Man, I nearly died when I saw the cost of the parts on the link above, beautiful but not really in my price range. Anyway she would kill me if a spent that sort of money!

Hello, I was looking for Hurricane spade grip dimensions/details. AFAIK there was only one type of spade grip used by WW2 RAF fighters ? If that so, projects made for Spitfire are also applicable for my beloved Hurri ?
Best regards, Czarek.
Actually there are a couple types by part No, the differences are minute tho (mainly the stamping of Dunlop logo/part no and the material it is made from)AFAIK there was only one type of spade grip used by WW2 RAF fighters ?
http://www.spitfirespares.com//Pages/controls.html
Czary,
Well, seems that tecnically Hurricane "spad" grip is
Dunlop AH2040.
Spitfire is
Dunlop AH8068.
Typhoon is
Dunlop AH8005.
Visually they are very similar. Probable this different code is due different "gosenecks", or like Typhoon one that have electric fire button instead pneumatic of Spit/Hurri.
For example you find reference of AH2040 fit in Spitfires.
This mater is more complicated than "100 octanes fuel" in BoB.
Unless you buy some set of copy of original plans, difficulty you find drawings on Web, in years what I find is these linked above.
These guys that made some CAD drawings dont share then.
So, if you whant a "real" one the only option is buy some cast replica (are some good, some bad).
Or - for game purposes - use available drawings.
In Keyplublishing forum a guy - Air Ministry - said to be writing a book about these grips.

Me Sketchup 3D "skill" end before some more useful... but maybe help with dimensions:
Notice that upper and lower tubes have a different profile.

Inspired by this thread, did some "plastic model".
Electrical 90 degrees joint plastic tubes (0,015$) ~20mmOD, PVC 32mm OD, Epoxy putty, CA glue...
The tube dimensions are not correct - and the drawing used as reference have differences from real photos (that show differences even in the same model, eg Spit)- so the goal is some "look alike".
Small sections of 90º joint mount a section 180º.
The overal diameter of drawing are ~140 mm, but I decided reduce for 130mm (based on information posted above) that fit better on my hand.
Coca-Cola cap + roll on ball + PVC 22mm OD = Epoxy putty = a reasonable fire button.
This switch come from a old computer case - have a feature that allow easy MOD to block his movement when turned 90º (Safe)
After much, much sanding (and saw a piece of a nail ...)
Next to do, the brake lever...

now that's a nice piece of engineering there 1lokos. abit of wiring and a micro switch behind that button would look the bees knees (sweet)but the question i will ask is.
I've seen some sticks with what looks like a bicycle brake lever through the middle of the spade so
(now im ex army, be gentle!)
1. what was that for ?
2. was the spitfire or hurricane fitted with this devise?
Last edited by 235 Sqn. Coldstreamer (QJ-X); Sep-08-2013 at 14:38.
1) the brakes- it controls them by air pressure . There is also a control valve connected to the rudder so if you squeeze the brakes with right rudder applied, the air pressure is diverted to each brake proportionaly, enabling brakes to aid a turn-1. what was that for ?
2. was the spitfire or hurricane fitted with this devise?
there is a triple pressure gauge . - lower LHS instrument panel in Spit, floor behind control column in Hurri- the 2 lower needles show Left and right brake pressure , top one show overall system pressure.
Being air brakes the more normal mode of operation is repeated 'dabs' of brake rather than squeeze and hold. There is a video on youtube showing this operation in a hurricane rather well
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...4OFhNA0#t=2440
2) Both were so fitted
It was a brake lever, its on the diagram in the second post.
Case any go to make a fire button, some dimensions:
Imperial: ~ 1.5" and .75".

1lokos...Very nice job on the spade.....Really impressive work...Did you sleeve the plastic with something to strengthen the joints...I m suprised you got it looking so good from the first pic..Thanks for sharing...~S~

lokos this I am looking for ...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Supermarin...item2eca382a1d
And I would buy this for 59 £
but this ebay is end so...
I am looking for a ironworker !!!
about fire button is very difficult, to make it like realy button

Yes, this small piece on top of first pic - the threaded portion of tube.
Result in a very sturdy piece - I (accidentally) drop it some times and does not break.
sw1ive
The button need a lathe...
But since I dont have one, I did a button (a more large one) in epoxy putty and some plastic parts.
When assembled if you turn the knurled part 90 degrees the fire button is blocked.
After 1st primer.
"War time unknown secret, Spitfire brake handle are done in... birch plywood".
The handle tip is slightly twisted forward.
Some WIP:

As the goal is "lookalike", the result is quite satisfying - as people say in BoS forum "It's just (for) a game".
