Ideas to help promoting DCS WWII Kickstarter

    Greetings, folks!

DCS WWII kickstarter now reached 44000 dollars. With 25 more days to go, the project needs a steady flow of new backers. We're doing okay so far, but we could be doing much, much better. I think Ilya, Oleg and Igor need our help! Let us make this "our" project too!

The project looks good on paper, but few people are willing to read everything, get bored and eventually just dismiss the project as "just another weird geek-fest". Indeed, the kickstarter page looks a bit bland and I think people need better advertisement in order to understand just how awesome this project really is. I think we could help in some very effective ways:

    1) Convince Luthier to create an official facebook page for the project, so we can more easily forward information that is presented in a more concise, customizable and orderly fashion. In kickstarters just like in real life, presentation and appearances often make the difference.

    2) Create promotional posters about the kickstarter. We could even do a little friendly contest! It can be just a super cool photoshop pictures of a Spit and a 109 taken from CloD or a P-51D and a FW190 taken from DCS World... the thing is that such a "poster" would require general information about:
    a) what the project is about
    b) the importance of who is behind this
    c) the ambition of the project and why it matters (weather, seasons, etc.)
    d) a concise and easily understandable explanation of packages (not all of them, just the ones people are more likely to buy, like the 40 $ one)
    e) the potential behind the EDGE engine
    f) the fact that this project can appeal to ALL flight simmers: hardcore players just like those who like to press a button and fly "à la War Thunder".
    g) it's THE simulator so many of us have been asking for years. If the kickstarter fails, we're unlikely to get another chance. Not in another decade, that's for sure.

I do have some skills in photoshop/gimp... so I guess I could try to do a little something. Although, I'm 99 % sure many of you guys have way more experience and skill than me for this kind of thing.

    3) Create promotional videos of existing WW2 DCS aircrafts like the P-51D. These 2 videos made me buy the P-51D.
    Video 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubQbey-Um1c
    Video 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7_7KyyGeVA

    a) Team Fusion does excellent videos.
    b) GlowingAmraam also does superb (and I don't use this word lightly) videos. We should ask him if he would be interested to help Ilya, Oleg and Igor with their project! I'm sure he would be thrilled to give a hand given the opportunity.
    c) Anyone else skilled in doing videos could do something to help promote this game! Simply flying the P-51D in DCS World could give a pretty good idea of the level of immersion they're aiming for.

    Thoughts? Suggestions? Let's brainstorm!

Great post , think the single most effective solution would be to have some advertisement of the kickstarter from someone on Youtube who has a lot of Warthunder videos/fans.Their fan base is juts immense.

Mysticpuma is another good one for videos if he has time away from TF LET'S KICK IT!

The problem with creating promo videos isn't that videos aren't easy to make, it's that from my side of things I don't own DCS or the P-51 add-on, so that severely limits anything I can do. If I did have them, I probably could put something together, but in all honesty I can't justify buying DCS P-51 just to make a promo video. Sorry that may sound selfish but I will be backing the kickstarter, I only have a small amount of expendable income and that is where it is heading.

If they want me to create videos for them I'd willing jump on board and help out...but without the software, it's a little bit tricky!

    Cheers, MP

Hell, Puma, I'll gift it to you on steam if that's what it takes! It's 12 bucks at the moment.

Just gimme your steam ID and I'll make my contribution to the war effort!

Re: Ideas to help promoting DCS WWII Kickstarter

Chaps, just so you know, Foul Ole Ron sent me a P-51 key about 3-days ago and I now have the Sim installed. I'd like to thank everyone who has offered me a key (blimey I've never felt so popular!) so now you should all know I am currently looking at an unofficial promo trailer.

Got to be honest here, there is a lot to learn.and there is little time, but I have a working idea, though I wont have it ready until Tuesday or Wednesday next week. You have to understand, stepping from something you know the ins and outs of and trying to pick up, learn.and create something awesome, is a really tough task.
My next thought is, if anyone has some action packed, flak filled, close dogfight combat, escorting bombers tracks and can send them to me, that would be really useful.
I'm still looking through the interface to see the default keys to zoom in view, what camera options there are, how to change the time of day, how to remove the big orange radar circle in the top right (in non simulation) and other arcade indicators...it's a steep learning curve....but, I have the intro completed, I just need to edit.some action from the DCS P-51 module, and I'll have something hopefully fun to.watch
It's a shame there aren't any (that I've found) HD videos of the edge engine, or images (large (minimum 1280x720) images of the edge engine or new cockpits like the 190)) as this would offer a couple of new options to the edit, so if there are, links appreciated

Now, just got to.cook dinner, vacuum the lounge, go to work, take cat to the vet, sleep...no, forget the sleep, create Friday update............

    Cheers, MP

Hi MP, busy day here so not much time but the attached 4v4 P51D - FW190 all-AI mission may be helpful. Unzip it it to any mission folder and open it in Missions. Mine lives under DCSW/Mods/aircrafts/P-51D/Missions/EN/Quickstart/ but I don't think it matters where. It runs in external view as all are AI and it should produce a few combat shot opportunities. These are the only WWII a/c available in DCSW atm.

I made a banner that can be used on forums that allow banners. You just put it in your signature, along with a link to the kickstarter page. I've found this to be very affective for getting people interested in something they didn't know was out there.

Hi Klem. Thanks for this. I have been testing it and changing a few skins...and learning (slowly) the cameras.

How the heck though do I change the time of day!!!!

Also, have you seen these files before:

    https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.c...445/?PAGEN_2=2

I'd really like to try them, and have installed them, but they don't show up. Any ideas?

    Cheers, MP

I haven't used that mod yet myself but the forum thread for that mod is here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=113128

If you ask a question there somebody'll help get it figured out pretty quickly.

    Hi MP,

How the heck though do I change the time of day!!!!
Open the mission in Mission Editor and click on either the yellow or blue aircraft icon. I side panel will open on the right. In the lower half select the Sigma tab (or, in Excel terminology, the Sum tab) and you will see the flight start time. I think you need to change that for both aircraft/Groups. The entire group is represented by the one icon as it has the number of Group planes in the upper half of that panel ("Unit 1 of 4").

I think Foul Ol Ron is right, the other forum will be more helpful than me regarding any terrain mod queries. I haven't used any DCS mods but the Readme from the d/l file is at the end of this post. I think I understand the installation though:

The folder C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\Bazar\Terrain\vfstextures only contains .zip files and the folders in the d/l file have some of the same names as those zip files. You have to open each folder and drag/drop the file(s) in it onto the same-name DCS zip file to replace the existing content. However, I would make copies of those original zip files if I were you in case you want to go back. I guess DCS accesses the data from those zip files directly by its own extract process.

You will only need the Sweetfx settings file if you are using Sweetfx with DCSW but I'm guessing you aren't.

    "READ ME FIRST.txt"

DCS Enhanced Terrain by Toby Rayfield (toby23)
    UPDATED 10/09/2013 v1.1
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This texture mod is something that I always wanted to do for DCS.
It is a highly detailed ground texture mod, created using aerial photography of the Sochi Adler region, for all four seasons and colour matched to existing DCS World textures.

    --------------------------
    Installation Instructions
    --------------------------
    1. Make sure that DCS World is not running.
    2. Navigate to this folder -> C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\Bazar\Terrain\vfstextures
    3. Drag and drop and Copy and Replace each of the four textures onto the corresponding zipped folder.
    4. I recommend using these textures with the default r_for_t.tga.dds files (the shadowed area under forests), so use them.

    ----
    NOTE
    ----
I have found a way to improve the look of my Ground Textures using Sweet FX.
My Sweet FX settings are included and should be used with DCS HDR set to Normal.

    ----------------------------------------
Windows won't allow you to change files?
    ----------------------------------------
If Windows won't allow you to drag and drop files onto zipped folders, then you will need to change your security settings for the DCS folder.

    1. Right click your DCS World folder, slect Properties
    2. click the Security tab
    3. select Administrators in the Group or user names window and click Edit
    4. select Administrators in the Group or user names window and check all the Allow boxes
    5. click Apply and then OK

    ----------
    Disclaimer
    ----------
I cannot be held responsible for anything that might happen to you or your computer as a result of you using my texture set. If you freak out and pour beer all over your keyboard whilst drooling over these textures from the cockpit of you Magnificent Eight, you cannot hold me responsible. You're welcome to buy me a TM Warthog though.
    Enjoy. Toby

    ------------
    UPDATE NOTES
    ------------
09/09/13 - Texture repeat improved from higher altitudes

I've tried to spread the word through my own sites main page, forum and Facebook and Twitter accounts and also through some mainstream gaming sites with large volumes of traffic such as N4G.com where I posted this: http://n4g.com/news/1349667/dcs-wwii...ckstarter-live and also a forum post on Eurogamer asking if they could give the Kickstarer some coverage: http://www.eurogamer.net/forum/thread/257119

If you ask a question there somebody'll help get it figured out pretty quickly.

Thanks Foul Ole Ron, I went to the link and followed the instructions.....but I just don't see any change in the textures

If anyone can check the files at the download link above....all I get in my extracted folders is one .dds file marked noise? So one .dds file in each folder? I copied the new texture .dds into the correct zip folder, but it doesn't overwrite anything it just gets added?

So I'm currently (I presume) working with the stock textures.

Secondly. I have a great mission set up by klem for a qucik Ai dogfight, but in Mission Editor is their a quick way to make one of the aircraft player controlled so I can jump into the dogfight?

Thirdly, all the P-51's shoot down the 190's very easily...how can I get the 190's to shoot down the P-51's (for balance in the video?)

Anyway guys, all help much appreciated. Even though the sequences will not be prolonged, any action will surely get some attention, so this 'unofficial' promo will hopefully be entertaining.

I am structuring it so it has text between the action and I'll link to the kickstarter.....with a little more 'begging' for financial input from those who are newly viewing it. I have an idea...but little time, probably got about 10-hours spare next-week to capture, edit and create something eye-catching....blimey!

    Cheers, MP

Yes. Just set one of the mustangs as "client" or "player" in the editor instead of setting AI skill. (client is more often used for multiplayer as you can have multiple planes with that setting)

The mission is for 1 FW and 3 or 4 P51s right? If you balance it a bit you should have different results

Re: Ideas to help promoting DCS WWII Kickstarter

You can set the skill level for each individual plane in the mission editor too but it looks to me like ED haven't gotten around to fully programming the Dora AI. I set up a 4v4 engagement with all the Mustangs on average skill setting and the Doras on excellent. The best the Doras could manage was damaging one Mustang before they all got shot down. Looks like you might have to set up a 8v4 or something.

You have to put the .dds file into the existing .zip file of the same name as the download folder the .dds file was in. I think you can just and drag and drop the new .dds file onto the .zip file otherwise use 7-zip to add the .dds file to the zip folder BUT I suggest you make a backup copy of the .zip files first.

So I'm currently (I presume) working with the stock textures.

    Sounds ike it

You can go into mission editor and click on the half-elipse icon that represents the aircraft/group, as you would for changing the time of mission start. Then in that right hand panel, upper half, change Skill to Client or Player (I think Player puts you straight into the cockpit and I don't know what happens with a group of 4 but Client lets you select your aircraft when you enter the mission.) Alternatively you can, having clicked on the icon, click alongside it to create another aircraft, set it to 1 of 1 and make it Client or Player. I hope that works ok I haven't played very much with the ME.
