Bf 109 and G50 rad settings

Hey guys for a few weeks now I've been playing around with the radiators on the bf109 and the G50 and I think I've found a good set up for rad settings for certain scenarios although this works for me it might not be for everyone as it increases work load but also increases efficiency and survivability

Bf 109 rpm 2000-2400 never exceed the rpm's past 2400 as you will blow your motor

    Bf 109

    1 # level flight
    oil rad 50-60%
    Water rad 65 - 75%
    Ata 1.2 or less

    2 # shallow dive attack
    Oil 55%
    Water 65-75%
    Ata full power

    3# shallow climb
    Oil 60 %
    Water 75-100 % 75% if climbing at 350kph and 75-100% if climbing at 300kph
    Ata 1.2

    4 # steep climb
    Oil 75%
    Water 85-100%
Ata full at start of climb bring back to 1.2-0 at top of climb

5 # out run opponent WEP
    Oil 40%
Water 50-100% start at 50% and as you gain seperation open rad to 75 -100%
Depending on engine temp as it will be on its limits
Ata wep ( war emergency power )
Shallow dive will reach 500 -520kph that is 310-323mph and will give you time to call for help as the spit will be struggling to pull you in

6# out run opponent no WEP
    Oil 50%
Water 65-75% - open or close on your own judgement based on engine temps
Ata full 100% throttle will reach 490-500 kph on the deck .

    G50
    All purpose set and forget
    Oil rad 65%
    Air rad 65%
    Boost cutout on
    Prop pitch 3 clicks down ( 85% )
    110% throttle
Will get up to 420-430 kph in level flight

ALL these setting have been tested under combat scenarios but you must be vigilant in watching and adjusting water temps to maintain a healthy engine

    Re: Bf 109 rad settings

    Hi Endless,

These numbers are great for new 109 pilots and experienced alike. I'll sticky this thread for the time being for easy retrieval. When TF patch 4.2 is released, would you be kind enough to verify these settings still hold good in the face of possible FM tweaks? (Or recommend any adjustment(s) if necessary).

I would like to include this data in the Beginners Section.

    Thanks,

    Snapper

Hey snapper will certainly look at them and make changes if they are not effective in 4.2 have also added the G50

Re: Bf 109 and G50 rad settings

It is good to know that you are able to leave your oil radiator at 40% the entire time. I have been varying my oil between 75% and 60% simply because I am very afraid of overheating in the middle of an engagement.

How do you know how far open your water radiator is? Do you just remember how many spins it takes to fully open it and base it off of that?

Re: Bf 109 and G50 rad settings

Each click opens or closes the rads by 5%. That is in case you use a button, not a slider. You can also look at the wing and see what your setting is for water rads and at the lever for the oil rads in the 109.

You can also make a new info window and make the digital engine inforation. It's the easiest way to check your setti gs (throttle, pitch, oil rads). Water rads in the 109 won't show there, though.

Okay I am only curious about the water radiator settings.

Are you saying there is a percentage for this somewhere on the wing? The only visual information I know about for the water radiator is the crank on the right hand side of the cockpit. And clicking the water radiator button certainly does not seem to open and close the radiator by 5%, but instead by some unknown amount seeing as it spins the crank.

Re: Bf 109 and G50 rad settings

Those are pretty good 109 settings but you are missing one thing that can send it all sideways and that is rpm. Those will all work as long as rpm is maintained between 2400 and 2000.

deviCe, yes, there is an indicator if you lean over (right) and look toward the wing root. It is a "plug" that moves up and down and has rings on it that you make flush with the wing surface for a given setting. I usually open mine all the way and then close it one full turn. It stays there almost always unless climbing hard or combat manuvering and then I'll open it.

Re: Bf 109 and G50 rad settings

Well, the 109 doesn't show how open it is, but in other planes (and the oil radiator), each click is always 5%. I doubt the 109 rads work differently.
The little stub in the wing shows open, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 and closed.

The hand crank can be an indicator too. IIRC 3 o'clock is 3/4 open. And 12 o'clock is 1/2 open. It's a good quick reference if you don't want to look over your shoulders in the wing root.

Re: Bf 109 and G50 rad settings

Hey guys glad you like the settings

With the bf 109 rpm is key But these setting are always changing due to flight circumstances
the oil rad opens at 5% each time you press the key to open so to get to 40% thats 8 key presses
as for water rad there is a bar that moves with the water rad if you look out the right window onto the wing there is a bar that sticks out closest to the base of the wing 50 % is as low as you want to go and it is key to maintaining a healthy engine so if you are diving on a target close rad to 50% before attack and start opening it to 100% as you zoom up and get ready for next attack close to 75% on second attack and open again when zooming up and so forth
yes this greatly increases work load but you also get the most you can out of your aircraft and gain as much energy as possible in the dives

Bah, set it to 50 % oil and 3/4 air and forget about rads.

Re: Bf 109 and G50 rad settings

Really good post for newer players endless. Those G50 settings are ace but as you know, you'll need to include rpm as it can not run for that long with full rpm at full boost. The rpm needs to be minus 3 clicks from full (press prop pitch button down/coarse 3 times), which equates to about 2350/2400rpm or 85%.

with this addition it would be rock solid:

    G50
    All purpose set and forget
    Oil rad 40%
    Air rad 60%
    Boost cutout on
Prop pitch 3 clicks down (85%)
    110% throttle
Will get up to 420-430 kph in level flight

Re: Bf 109 and G50 rad settings

By the looks of the OP it seems the oil rad you just leave at 40% all the time and it's the water rad that needs to be babysat during different flight phases.

    is everything here a-ok?
