German Life Buoy- Circa Battle of Britain

    S!~
Hey guys and gals- just a quick post here. In recent months myself, The AKA Wardogs , and Im sure others were thrilled to see a new map added to the rotation on the ATAG War Server. The name of the map escapes me- but its the one with the Isle of Wight- and the air-spawns near the German buoys.
I found in one of my fairly old Time/ Life "Battle of Britain" books a pix of one! Pretty cool and rare to see one - so here you are. Forgive the pix- I took it with my Windows phone.

Cool man, thanks for sharing! Yah, the kanalkampf map. Looks like a floating out-house. Hope they stocked it with TP! Seriously though, it's quite thoughtful of the Germans to put these out there. I wonder how many times they were used?

The RAF pilots use the red cross on then as target.

"..The famous ‘Udet-Seenotbojen’ (rescue buoys) were unfortunately not as useful as they had promised to be...although marked very obviously with a red cross, they were immediately shot up by the Tommies..."

There is a film that shows pilots using one of these. Was it 'One Of Our Aircraft Is Missing'? I think they escape from France in a rowing boat and end up in one of these that already has some LW survivors in it. They take it over and a Britsh boat gets there first and tows it back as one of them is too injured to be lifted out.

The Germans always have such fab names for things.

Its not a buoy, definitely not a booee.

Es ist eine Rettungsboje (its a rescue buoy)

At least its not eine kleine Katze

Oh wow, and they even had cigarettes as part of the survival essentials. If with some luck they also had schnapps, then this might explain why so many LW pilots chose to bail out…
