    Saitek Combat Flight Pedals Cleaning

    Hello ALL
I was flying the other night on the server everything was working well except for my rudder peddles.Every time I sent the peddles through its axis I was getting this awful grinding sound the peddles were stiff and really not working at all well. So I decided to strip them down ,which was quite simple
    1.jpg

when I got he base plate off this is what greeted me the damage was awesome I have had these peddles for about two and half years now, and never in that time have I bothered to strip them down

    2.jpg

    3.jpg

    resized 6.jpg

The cleaning process was easy enough just got out the white spirit, M-kote and away I went. I think the guy who was greasing up the peddles at Saitek must have has some sort of finger seizure cause the amount of grease I removed was un- believable, and which also was contributory to the amount of damage incurred because the dust, grit and hair(yuk) was intertwined in it causing a abrasive gluppy mess. After about an hour or so I had reduce the deep pitting in the surfaces of the base plate, and main board of the peddles, taking care not to get the free moving wires caught up on any screw when re-assembling the two plates.
Everything was great smoother than the peddles have been well since I can remember. I used the M-kote sparingly but strategically and all problems solved. I think that periodic cleaning is the only answer to these type of problems. So I hope this quick how to is helpful to any of you guys who own this brand of peddle

Always listen to your rudders. Twice I stood too heavily on my saiteks and the rollers jumped out of position. Had to strip, clean and re-assemble.

I have the Saitek combat pedals. Couldn't quite get it to centre smoothly - always got sticky in the centre. This is due to a spring loaded pin that drops into a recess to help hold centre-called a 'detente' I think. Do yourself a favour and take it out, so much smoother now. If you do a search one guy has pics of how to do.

Re: Saitek Combat Flight Pedals Cleaning

My centering spring physically broke 1 month after the warranty expired. Replacing that spring is rather simple using a spring of your choice from the hardware store and some safety wire.

With nothing to lose, I also contacted Mad Catz customer service who replaced the entire product since the part was not available from them separately. Great customer support!

Re: Saitek Combat Flight Pedals Cleaning

I purchased a Saitek pro combat pedals a few weeks ago and used it a couple times but I noticed that I could not adjust the tension because the knob is so stiff! Thus so far I've just been stuck with the tension that came from the factory.

Good post! My Crosswinds came this morning so I will be retiring my Saiteks.. I don't think I will be needing another set of pedals ever .. but I think I will clean them up before I put them away..

Prevention is the best action. Have your maid (Mrs. Baffin) vacuum clean the pedals clean during her weekly rounds. If there's no dirt outside, there will be no dirt inside!

Which one is broken? I just recently switched one of the brake pots for an Allegro 1324 Hall sensor, because it was spiking badly. I am also working on PCBs for a TLE5011 sensor in the rudder axis. If you just want to switch pots, they are 47k linear, 6mm.

    right brake
It was iffy from the start, though I didn't pay attention to it since I only fly Allied fighters
So it's not like I need it to work, but the chance may arise I might want to try out Axis planes

For all I know it's just a cold solder joint, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to disassemble the brakepedal

Re: Saitek Combat Flight Pedals Cleaning

Oh ok, thats really easy actually.

Press down the silver "Push" labled button on top of the foot rest and pull the adjustable upper part upwards. There are three different adjustment points. If you push the button in on the last one you can pull the upper foot piece completely off. Then you will find 6 screws, three per left/right row. Unscrew these and pull off the lower part of the foot rest. Inside you will find the pot, with the crimped cables. These cables are really hard to solder for some reason and I do quite a lot of soldering, so you better dont cut off the crimped connections. I had my fair share of trouble with these crappy cables.

Unfortunately, I have the combat rudder, where the pedals are mounted differently
(I think I'm gonna have to pull it open from the bottom to get the pedals off)

Re: Saitek Combat Flight Pedals Cleaning

Doesnt it work just like in the video here? Just unscrew the allen screws on both sides and maybe there is a screw on top of that pedal post, that should actually be enough to reach the pots. A friend of mine has them, I will ask him to check.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gh26_yIfhnQ

    saitek_combat_rudder.jpg

To pull them off completely you have to remove pretty much everything from bottom up, detach the two JSTs on the green main PCB connecting the braking pots and pull them out of their "hot glue sockets" in the octagon shaped syncronizer. Its a whole lot of work, I did it to completely degrease and clean my pedals a year ago or so. I attached some pictures I made in the midst of it, they arent the best quality though.

Funny thing is, that the adjustment discs (or the allen bolts) don't come off on mine

Luckily found a DIY on the DCS forums
